We are seeking a bioprocess engineer to optimize and scale upstream fermentation processes. Our ideal candidate has a background in chemical engineering or process development in a biological context.
Ideally you will have experience with taking biomanufacturing processes from bench (250 mL) to pilot (100L) or demonstration scale (1000L). You should be familiar with bioprocess parameters, various reactor designs and modes of operation, strong quantitative and data analysis skills, and an ability to think from first principles. Additionally, you should have a solid grasp of molecular biology and can draw connections between process parameters and the biological requirements of the host.
As GB pursues vertical integration, you will have exciting opportunities to work on end-to-end hardware, software, and process solutions. We're looking for someone who thrives on complete task ownership, rapid execution, and interdisciplinary thinking.
Key Responsibilities:
- Plan and execute experiments to optimize fermentation parameters including feed rates, oxygenation, ratios of media components, and different media compositions
- Analyze time-series process data (including analytical chemistry data) to draw conclusions and inform future parameter optimization campaigns. SIMPLIFY
- Maintain, upgrade, and assemble fermentation equipment
- Contribute to the development of intellectual property by writing up novel concepts as invention disclosures/patents
Required Qualifications:
- BS, MS, or PhD in chemical engineering, biochemical engineering, biology, or a related field with 2+ years of relevant experience in bioprocess development
- Strong background in fermentation operations (Ambr 250, Biolector, analyzing process data)
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to think creatively to overcome technical challenges
- Demonstrated ability to execute complex projects and meet aggressive timelines
Additional preferred qualifications:
- Hardware sensibility: you can build things with your hands, have no trouble getting hands-on to assemble, diagnose, and cobble together mechanical solutions
- Background in process design: strong grasp chemical engineering principles to think about industrial requirements (material balances, recycle streams, unit operation sizing)
- Prior experience with the design and development of fermentation, especially related to scale-up and process optimization
- Practical mechanical and industrial site experience with pilot scale and larger bioprocess equipment; troubleshooting bioprocess plants
