    Job Description

NBC News Digital is seeking a breaking news editor to assign and edit breaking news stories on a wide range of topics.

The morning editor will play a key role in setting up the digital breaking news team for success, assigning and editing many of the first stories of the day. You will start your morning full of ideas about what needs to get done and develop a plan to accomplish it. You’ll be across the latest updates on the major stories of the moment, both what we have reported and what our competitors are up to.

You’ll proactively run news stories through from initial identification to publication on a wide range of topics — extreme weather, crime, human interest, pop culture, among others — to make sure the site has fresh stories up early and breaking news is covered in a timely fashion. The morning editor will also tee up dayside editors with plans for stories and key events.

When working with reporters, you’ll assign stories quickly and clearly, and provide real-time feedback to facilitate reporters’ development. You’ll publish stories in a variety of formats, including live blogs, with best SEO practices, engaging headlines, and videos to maximize reader engagement and audience potential.

This role is based in New York City and will report to the Editorial Director, Breaking News.

    Responsibilities:

    • Assign breaking news stories, edit and publish for accuracy, grammar and style.
    • Actively monitor sources of breaking news (Dataminr, Twitter, wires, internal communications) and be prepared to jump on news seconds after it happens.
    • Launch and manage live blogs on major breaking news events.
    • Assign and edit stories on a wide range of topics, including but not limited to: extreme weather, entertainment, sports, business, health, crime, human interest and pop culture.
    • Oversee multiple reporters at once and make sure that each has a clear assignment and is producing a story in a timely fashion as laid out at time of assignment.
    • Coordinate and communicate clearly with other editors across Digital, including other section editors and platforms team on publishing timing.
    • Be a first line of defense to ensure accuracy, fairness and NBC News’ reporting standards are upheld in all articles.
    • Make sure we have the best photos, videos and other visual elements to help tell our stories and that our headlines are sharp and engaging.
    • Ability to deliver honest feedback to reporters in real time in a productive fashion and help guide reporters to improvements.
