Outside Design is a Colorado based startup founded in June 2021 with the mission to design + build better ways for people to experience nature. We're now beginning to consider experienced builders for summer of 2025 (and perhaps one to start immediately) at our site we've opened in the mountains right outside of beautiful Salida, CO.

We're a small team and very focused on creating novel experiences in nature. Prior to this, the founder (Ben) worked at BCG and Tesla, started a warehouse restoration company, and created the most wish-listed Airbnb in a Midwest state. Now, we are building a company to scale the operation and create something that helps people spend more time in nature and gather the numerous benefits of being in nature including (but not limited to) lower anxiety, improved concentration, increased creativity, improved mood, confidence, and overall physical and mental health. So far, we've opened 11 cabins and a Scandinavian Spa at our Salida location.

Some very exciting news—we're expanding to another site in the foothills right outside of Denver!! We aim to continue expanding in quality and size and we also plan to continue investing more and more in our employees. In the past 3 years, we roughly doubled average wages and while we cannot make explicit promises, we hope to continue increasing opportunities for anyone who works hard, is capable, and contributes to the mission. We believe this ability to grow withing a fast-growing company is a key distinction between us and many other companies in the mountains of CO.

Position Info :

The lead builder is a role that must be comfortable covering a wide range of building tasks—from design to framing to finishing. This role works with a team of 5 including Ben (founder), Evan (primary builder) and 2-3 others.

For the summer of 2025, Outside Design is planning (pending local approval) to build:

1) New custom treehouse cabin: This 196 square foot cabin will be one of our best cabins yet

2) Upper custom pergola: We plan to build one large pergola at the top of the property for views over out private valley. This will be used as a large event space and also as a primary guest hang out

3) Amphitheater renovation: We have a 200-person amphitheater at the top of the site which has electricity but is very run down. We will be renovating it and building a new stage area prior to launching events on-site

4) Lodge renovations: We have a long list of continued renovations in our main lodge (a 3,000 square foot building which is currently for employees only) including taking down a wall, renovating two bathrooms, and improving various other areas. These projects are ideal for imperfect weather

5) New site build out: We have a new site which will begin its design and engineering phase in May. We expect to do notable build projects there in summer of 2025 and scaling to full time there in 2026

Schedule Flexibility and Pay :

The schedule is flexible, but we will create build timelines to track against. Vacation plans are also accommodated, we just work together to see who can cover. Faster build without notable sacrifices to quality will result in higher pay—we very much believe in payment for outcomes as opposed to hours. We offer pay structures by outcomes (e.g., $X per milestone or hourly rates).

There are also bonuses for projects that come in ahead of schedule or under budget or that were generally executed in an impressive fashion.
