Job Overview:
We are looking to hire a professional Building Permit Technician with strong communication skills as they will be frequently communicating with contractors regarding their permit applications. The purpose of this position is to perform district-based duties associated with the handling, verifying, reviewing and permitting of contractor’s for Facilities design and construction. The work involves varied work methods and problems which includes lead responsibilities for evaluation and processing of all documents for permitting. Work requires exercise of judgment based on related knowledge of departmental policy and applicable state statutes. A successful candidate should have a technical capacity to produce related reports, collection of funds and document analysis in functional area. Responsible for keeping up to date on current technology, as job appropriate. With the support of the district, attends training to ensure skill level in various technologies is at the level required to perform in current position. This position provides related technical support to other personnel as needed and reports to the Building Code Official in addition to perfoming other duties as assigned.
Experience Requirements:
- A minimum of 3 years of experience
- Demonstrated ability to organize and manage documents and paperwork flow.
- Demonstrated ability to use various software applications.
- Creating and maintaining filing systems for the documentation for permits.
- Assisted in workshops and training sessions including producing materials for training purposes.
- Composing and typing correspondence requiring a knowledge of departmental operations and regulations, for transmittal under own jurisdiction.
- Preparing, reviewing and processing state reports and insures they are mailed in a timely manner
- Operating a computer to enter, retrieve, review, or modify data; utilizes advanced word processing, database, and software programs.
- Operating a variety of machinery, equipment, and tools associated with department activities, which may include a typewriter, adding machine, or fax in addition to being responsible for maintaining information in a timely and accurate method.
- Providing guidance, assistance, and/or interpretation to others on how to apply procedures and standards to specific situations.
- Coordinating work among various groups of people and documentation.
- Operating, maneuver and/or control the actions of equipment, machinery, tools, and/or materials used in performing essential functions.
- Utilizing a wide variety of reference, descriptive, and/or advisory data and information.
- Performing addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division; ability to calculate decimals and percentages; may require ability to utilize principles of fractions and/or interpret graphs.
- Applying principles of rational systems and interpretting instructions furnished in written, oral, diagrammatic, or schedule form.
- Exercising independent judgment to adopt or modify methods and standards to meet variations in assigned objectives.
- Exercising the judgment, decisiveness and creativity required in situations involving the evaluation of information against sensory, judgmental, or subjective criteria, as opposed to that which is clearly measurable or verifiable.

Physical Requirements:
- The ability to exert very moderate light work with some combination of stooping, kneeling, crouching and crawling. May involve some manipulating or moving of 12-20 pound items occasionally.
- Sensory Requirements: Most tasks require visual perception and discrimination. Some tasks require oral communications ability.
- Environmental Factors: Tasks are regularly performed without exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, temperature and noise extremes, machinery, vibrations, electric currents, traffic hazards, animals/wildlife, toxic/poisonous agents, violence, disease, or pathogenic substances.
Education Requirements:
- High school diploma or GED; supplemented by a minimum of five (5) years clerical/secretarial or technical work experience; three (3) of those years must be specifically related to construction, real estate, or related work; or any equivalent combination of related education, training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the essential job functions.
- If no certification upon employment in job, certification must be obtained within first year in this position.
