    SALARY:  $21.13 to $23.45 per hour, Grade 5

    ABOUT THE ROLE:   Under the supervision of the Burleigh County Weed Board, this position is responsible for the enforcement of applicable regulations under the North Dakota Century Code (NDCC) 4.1-47 Noxious Weed Control. The Burleigh County Weed Control Officer may enter upon any land within the jurisdiction of the officer to perform duties and to exercise powers under NDCC sections 4.1-47-01 through 4.1-47-30, including taking specimens of weeds or other materials, without the consent of the landowner or other person responsible for the land and without being subject to any action for trespass or damages, provided reasonable care is exercised.

    THIS POSITION ADMINISTERS THE WEED CONTROL PROGRAM; SPRAYING IS DONE VIA THIRD PARTY CONTRACTORS.

    CANDIDATE REQUIREMENTS:

    • Requires completion of High School Diploma or a GED, and three (3) years of herbicide application; or any equivalent combination of training and /or experience that provides required knowledge and abilities.
    • B.S. Degree in agriculture or related field preferred.
    • Must have or be able to obtain a commercial applicator's certification form the North Dakota State University, Pesticide Division. Upon hire, must obtain and maintain Commercial Applicator's License in the following categories: CORE, Agricultural Pest Control, Right-of-Way, and Ornamental Turf.
    • Must possess and retain at the employee's expense, a Class D driver's license as issued by the Driver's License Division of the State of North Dakota, and a clean driving record.
    • Working knowledge of pesticide application, federal and state weed control laws, identification of noxious weeds, and application formulas and distribution.
    • Required skills include word processing, spreadsheets, email, internet, and other general computer usage skills, familiarity with GPS data recorders and mapping software.

    PRIMARY JOB DUTIES:

    1. Applies chemicals for the control of noxious weeds on state, county and township right-of-way, public and private land by using spraying equipment and correct formulas.
    2. Maintains all equipment owned by the Weed Board in good working condition.
    3. Maintain a sufficient supply of weed control related personal protective equipment, Maintenance supplies, and office supplies and order as needed.
    4. Work with township officials in identifying areas of need within appropriate areas and notify where and when spraying will need to be done.
    5. Survey and plot noxious weeds and biological control areas (insectaries) and after determining needs, arranges for distribution.
    6. Receive calls and information regarding noxious weed issues in the county, work with farmers, homeowners, and other members of the public to address needs, answer questions, and investigate complaints and reports to county officials.
    7. Ensures other sprayers keep accurate and detailed records for each spraying, checks records for accuracy and completeness.
    8. Maintains Material Safety Data Sheets on all pesticides for Weed Control and its storage facility and provides training to staff at least annually.
    9. Ensures proper storage of chemicals and inspects storage areas at least monthly and control and maintain inventory.
    10. Attend multiple trainings, meetings, and conferences that pertain to weed control and public education.
    11. Maintain county membership in the North Dakota Wee Control Association.
    12. Prepares and applies for weed control related grants through state and other sources.
    13. Publish and maintain information on the Weed Board page on the Burleigh County Website.
    14. Manage the Burleigh County Weed Board and Townships' cost sharing assistance programs to assist landowners.
    15. Provide certification of gravel, scoria, topsoil, or sand surface mining operations.
    16. Provide Weed Seed Feed Forage inspections and certifications.
    17. Produce agendas, financial reports, and minutes for all Weed Board meetings.
    18. Provide weekly updates to the Weed Board Chairman.
    19. Accomplish day to day office requirements in a timely and responsible manner.
    20. Direct and assist spray contractor to control noxious weeds.
    21. Assist the Weed Board as needed in the yearly budget process.
    22. Supervise employees hired by the Weed Board.
    23. Performs other duties as required.
