The Opportunity
Carlson Hydraulics is seeking a CNC Machine Shop Floor Lead. This role is essential to maintaining productivity, quality, and mentorship within the CNC lathe production team. The position requires a blend of technical expertise in CNC lathe operations, leadership skills, and a commitment to fostering a collaborative, growth-oriented environment. The CNC Machine Shop Floor Lead will be responsible for overseeing a team of operators, ensuring efficient workflows, managing machine setups, performing G-code adjustments, and working closely with other shop leads to maintain smooth operations.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead CNC lathe operations, ensuring efficient workflows and high-quality production.
- Manage and mentor a team of 7-10 lathe operators, fostering a collaborative and productive environment.
- Work closely with the Mill Shop Lead, overseeing 3-4 operators to ensure timely production and smooth operations.
- Set up and adjust CNC machines for newer operators, guiding them to success and ensuring precise results.
- Read, write, and edit G-code to maintain exacting specifications for parts.
- Oversee work tickets, schedules, and materials, making adjustments to keep operations on track.
- Step in to operate CNC machines when needed, especially during absences or team vacations.
- Train and mentor team members, offering solutions and expertise on complex technical challenges.
- Operate Fanuc and Haas CNC lathes and mills, handling fixture work coordinates, tool offsets, and more.
- Use precision measuring tools to inspect and ensure that all parts meet our high standards.
- Perform tooling adjustments, replace worn tools, and keep machines operating efficiently.
What You Will Bring:
- Proven leadership ability, with a focus on growing and improving the team and company.
- Expertise in reading and writing G-code, Mastercam, GD&T, and Calipers, and hands-on experience in CNC lathe setup and operation working with metals.
- A problem-solver who takes the initiative and thrives in a fast-paced production environment.
- 5+ years of production experience, particularly with Hyundai and Haas CNC machines.
- Strong organizational skills, with the ability to manage work tickets, schedules, and team assignments.

30 Days
- Technical Proficiency: Become familiar with the CNC equipment, particularly Hyundai and Haas CNC lathes and mills, and achieve proficiency in reading, writing, and editing G-code for specific parts.
- Operational Familiarity: Develop a thorough understanding of the current production flow, work tickets, schedules, and team assignments.
- Mentorship & Communication: Begin mentoring newer team members on basic machine operations and setup.
- Software Skills: Develop initial proficiency in using Mastercam software for job setup and modifications.
- Attendance & Punctuality: Demonstrate consistent attendance and punctuality to set a positive example for the team.
60 Days
- Leadership Engagement: Actively lead daily shift meetings, provide constructive feedback to team members, and make improvements in workflow processes.
- Quality Control: Use precision measuring tools to ensure parts meet specifications and conduct routine inspections to uphold quality standards.
- Collaboration: Coordinate with the Mill Shop Lead on schedules and jointly address any production issues.
- Production Bottlenecks: Identify potential bottlenecks in production and develop strategies to resolve them, with input from leadership and peers.
90 Days
- Team Development: Establish a mentoring program to enhance team skills and improve collaboration.
- Efficiency Improvements: Implement solutions to streamline CNC lathe workflows and optimize production processes.
- Advanced Mastercam Skills: Demonstrate full proficiency with Mastercam for CNC programming adjustments.
- Operational Mastery: Operate CNC machines independently during high-demand periods or in team member absences to maintain production flow.
- Long-Term Planning: Develop a roadmap with leadership for ongoing team improvements and personal and professional growth within the company.
