On-Site Camp Director – Camp Live Oak Location: Hugh Taylor Birch State Park, 3109 E. Sunrise Blvd., Fort Lauderdale, FL 33304 Position Type: Seasonal Seasonal Commitment: • Spring Break Camp: March 24 – March 31, 2025 • Summer Camp: June 9 – August 8, 2025 (10 weeks) • Fall Camp: Thanksgiving Week (4 days) • Winter Camp: Late December – Early January (2 weeks)
ABOUT CAMP LIVE OAK Camp Live Oak, the only ACA-accredited camp in Broward County, has been offering award-winning outdoor education programs for over 35 years. Our campers, ages 5-16, enjoy a traditional day camp experience filled with hands-on science, nature-based activities, water sports, creative arts, and environmental education. Our highly qualified staff includes certified teachers, specialists, and environmental experts, all working to create a fun, educational, and safe experience for every child.
POSITION OVERVIEW The On-Site Camp Director is a leadership position responsible for the day-to-day operations of Camp Live Oak at Birch State Park. This role provides direction, supervision, and mentorship to camp staff, ensuring safety, organization, and engagement in all camp activities. The ideal candidate is organized, energetic, and passionate about environmental education, outdoor adventure, and youth development.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES Camp Operations & Leadership • Lead daily on-site camp operations, ensuring a safe, engaging, and well-organized environment. • Supervise and support approximately 30 staff members, including counselors, specialists, and volunteers. • Oversee all camp activities (swimming, archery, canoeing, science, arts & crafts, sports, field trips, etc.), ensuring safety and adherence to ACA standards. • Coordinate with program specialists (Science, Art, Sports) to ensure materials, equipment, and facilities are prepared and well-maintained. • Manage the camp store, overseeing transactions and inventory. • Completing and turning in paperwork for accreditation on a timely manner. Camper & Staff Supervision • Foster a positive, team-oriented culture among staff through leadership and motivation. • Implement staff coaching, evaluations, and disciplinary procedures as needed. • Conduct weekly staff meetings and evaluations to review successes, challenges, and upcoming plans. • Support camp counselors in addressing camper behavior issues and communicating with parents as needed.
Safety & Compliance • Ensure that all ACA safety standards and Leave No Trace Principles are followed. • Monitor all camp activities for risk management, ensuring compliance with all policies. • Act as the primary point of contact for emergencies and incidents, documenting and reporting as necessary. Parent & Community Relations • Maintain open communication with camp families, addressing concerns and sharing updates. • Work with the Director of Administration to ensure smooth camper check-in/check-out and parent interactions. Program Development & Planning • Work with Science and Art Teachers during Spring Camp lunches to develop Fall Camp themes and activity plans. • Meet with Science and Art Teachers by July 4th to plan Winter Camp themes and programming. • Identify equipment and supply needs early to allow time for community partnership outreach.
QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS Required: ✔ Leadership experience: Minimum 3 years in a supervisory role managing staff and program operations in camp, education, or outdoor recreation settings. ✔ Passion for youth development, nature, and outdoor activities. ✔ Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously. ✔ Excellent communication skills, including conflict resolution and staff coaching. ✔ Ability to work outdoors in Florida’s climate, including hot and humid conditions. ✔ Ability to lift and move up to 30 lbs (sports equipment, camp supplies, etc.). ✔ First Aid/CPR/AED certification (or willingness to obtain before camp starts).
Preferred: ➕ Certified Teacher with experience working with children ages 5-16. ➕ Degree in Recreation, Education, Environmental Science, or related field. ➕ Experience in budgeting, scheduling, and program development. ➕ Fluency in Spanish is a plus.
WORK SCHEDULE & COMPENSATION • Spring, Summer, Fall & Winter Camp Seasons (seasonal contract). • Summer Camp Hours: Monday – Friday, 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM, with two required weekend events and occasional additional hours. • Pre-Camp Training: Required attendance at staff training in May (evenings/weekends). • Compensation: $17.00 - $25.00 per hour (based on experience). No benefits included.
