Job Summary:
The Diabetes Educator will provide comprehensive diabetes education to inpatient adults, oversee diabetes education programs, and act as a consultant and resource for diabetes care and professional development. This role includes planning, implementing, and evaluating education initiatives in line with national standards.
Major Accountabilities / Specific Job Competencies:
Training and Education
- Deliver and manage diabetes education and training for inpatients and staff.
- Ensure educational materials and policies meet national standards.
- Lead the Diabetes Liaison Committee and collaborate with various departments.
- Provide orientation and training for new hires and RNs.
Program Development
- Identify educational needs and develop strategies to address them.
- Design and implement training programs to achieve measurable outcomes.
- Evaluate and revise educational programs as needed.
Planning and Problem Solving
- Utilize critical thinking for effective planning and problem resolution.
- Manage resources efficiently and anticipate potential issues.
- Address problems independently or with appropriate stakeholders.
Consultation and Performance Improvement
- Enhance staff performance through consultation and data analysis.
- Recommend and facilitate interventions for performance improvement.
- Support career advancement for staff members.
Communication and Relationships
- Build collaborative relationships through effective communication.
- Use assertive communication, active listening, and conflict resolution skills.
- Serve as a mentor and promote interdisciplinary collaboration.
Professional Development
- Engage in ongoing professional development and incorporate best practices.
- Set personal growth goals and participate in community and professional activities.
Qualifications:
- Education: BSN required; Master’s degree preferred.
- Certifications/Licenses: California RN license, Certified Diabetes Educator (CDE), BLS from the American Heart Association.
- Experience: At least 5 years in clinical diabetes education; insulin pump experience preferred.
- Technical Skills: Proficiency in Microsoft Outlook and PowerPoint; Clinical EMR experience.
