POSITION SUMMARY
Accountable to the Principal, the Assistant Principal has an exceptional record of success in fostering student achievement and strong school culture in middle and or high school environments. The Assistant Principal ensures that Carmen's core values are internalized as evidenced by student academic outcomes and behaviors.
The Assistant Principal develops and implements written curriculum and instructional practices that result in accelerated student academic achievement; supports effective teaching methods; reinforces Carmen's aspirational and constructive environment; tracks and responds to discipline and culture data; plans and implements professional development to support classroom management and instructional practice; maintains a consistent presence; plans and leads events; and meets or exceeds all school-wide academic and culture goals.
QUALIFICATIONS
- At least 3 years teaching experience with at least 1 year in a part-time or full-time leadership role
- Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction teacher and administrator licenses or eligibility
- Bachelor's Degree in education or related field; Master's Degree preferred
- Oral Spanish speaking skills preferred
- Knowledge and skills in creating a learning environment that strives for college readiness and high student achievement

- Knowledge, skills and ability in effective student behavior, interventions and classroom management
- Passion for quality education and student achievement

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Assists Principal in Curriculum Development and Implementation:
- Ensures curriculum is aligned with Common Core standards/NGSS in a rigorous college readiness learning environment
- Implements assessment practices, tracking, reporting and improving
- Documents curriculum according to policy and MPS Charter
- Logistics and data tracking
- Researches trends and research based practices in other schools and recommends improvements
- Ensures curriculum can be modified and differentiated to meet the needs of the individual learner
- Assists Principal in Supporting School-Wide Vision for Instructional Practice:
- Trains, supervises and evaluates teaching staff via weekly coaching and development cycle, holding faculty accountable to clear student growth targets, common assessments and ongoing peer collaboration
- Build deep and trusting relationships with staff to invest them and influence their practice
- Uses the Carmen Essentials framework to drive teaching methods and practices that create and maintain a growth mindset
- Ensures instructional practices can be modified and differentiated to meet the needs of the individual learner
- Facilitates the integration of technology as appropriate
- Drives student achievement by maintaining an urgent focus on using data to improve instruction
- Assists Principal in Fostering School-Wide Vision for Student Achievement
- Implements effective assessment tools to track, analyze and improve student achievement (Wisconsin Forward, MAP, STAR and GPA)
- Analyzes student data to identify trends and create action plans to best support student academic growth
- Coordinates and implements all local and state standardized testing
- Supports the principal in ongoing professional development of staff
- Oversees registrar functions for all grades including scheduling and class offerings
- Assists with hiring
- Creates a rigorous and urgent learning environment that supports college readiness
- Collaborates with teachers and student support staff on student referrals for additional resources
- Advocates for students' individual learning needs in collaboration with the SPED lead
- Keeps staff and students apprised of situations needing attention or intervention
- Covers classrooms as needed
- Collaborates with staff from other Carmen schools to identify and implement best practices in curriculum, assessment, and instructional practices
- Participates in Carmen network professional development
- Assists Principal in Fostering School-Wide Vision for School Culture
- Designs and implements programs, policies, practices and resources that build character development for students and staff
- Oversees consistent implementation of the Community Trust and all associated procedures
- Maintain accurate student discipline records, documenting all conferences, interventions and parent contacts
- Ensures that staff consistently enforces policies using consequences and incentives with students
- Establishes a college readiness culture with use of the school's mission and vision statements, including the Carmen Essentials and other approved implementation tools
- Invests students, staff and families in behavioral expectations and student achievement
- Models the Carmen mission, vision and values for students and staff
- Provides crisis interventions as needed
- Serves as a member of the Behavior Response to Intervention (RtI) Team and facilitates record-keeping and facilitation of Tier 1, 2, and 3 interventions in collaboration with the School Social Worker
- Welcomes students every day at the main entrance

- Provides direction and supervision to teachers as it relates to student behaviors and achievement

SUPERVISOR RESPONSIBILITIES
The Assistant Principal supervises some instructional staff and others as authorized by the Principal.
