Job Description: Cath Lab Technician
Position Summary: The Cath Lab Technician supports the cardiology team in the catheterization lab by preparing, operating, and maintaining diagnostic and interventional equipment, assisting physicians during procedures, and providing patient care.
Key Responsibilities:
Procedure Assistance:
Assist cardiologists and other medical professionals during cardiac catheterization, angioplasty, electrophysiology studies, and other interventional cardiology procedures.
Operate imaging equipment to visualize the heart and vascular structures.
Equipment Management:
Prepare and maintain catheterization lab equipment, including X-ray machines, catheters, stents, and other specialized tools.
Ensure all equipment is functioning properly before and during procedures.
Patient Care:
Prepare patients for procedures, including positioning and monitoring vital signs.
Provide reassurance and explain the procedure to patients to alleviate anxiety.
Monitor patients during procedures to identify and respond to any complications.
Documentation and Reporting:
Record procedure details, patient information, and any medications administered.
Maintain accurate patient records in compliance with hospital protocols and regulations.
Sterilization and Safety:
Maintain a sterile field and follow strict infection control protocols.
Ensure radiation safety for patients and staff by following guidelines and wearing appropriate protective gear.
Team Collaboration:
Work closely with nurses, radiologists, and other healthcare professionals to ensure optimal patient outcomes.
Participate in team briefings and debriefings.
Qualifications:
Education: Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Cardiovascular Technology, Radiologic Technology, or a related field.
Certification: Certification as a Cardiovascular Invasive Specialist (RCIS) or equivalent is often required or preferred.
Experience: Prior experience in a cath lab, operating room, or cardiovascular care setting is highly desirable.
Skills:
Proficiency with medical imaging and interventional equipment.
Strong knowledge of cardiac anatomy and physiology.
Ability to remain calm under pressure and manage emergencies effectively.
Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
Work Environment:
Hospital catheterization labs, outpatient clinics, or specialized cardiology centers.
Typically requires standing for long periods and working in a sterile environment.
May involve on-call duties and irregular hours, including evenings, weekends, or holidays.
