  • Responsibilities

    Position Purpose

    Under general supervision, performs work involved in construction and repair of cement and concrete surfaces and structures.

    Essential Functions and Basic Duties

    • Performs work on the mixing, pouring, spreading, and leveling of cement and concrete on such surfaces as sidewalks, steps, walls, curbs, ramps, streets, and roads.
    • Lays out the work to be done, sets forms in curved as well as straight lines.
    • Sets grade for drainage and sidewalks.
    • Determines materials to be used and selects proper tools to accomplish the job in accordance with appropriate methods and accepted trade practices.
    • Works from oral instructions, blueprints, work orders, and rough sketches.
    • Supervises co-workers on the concrete crew.
    • Performs other work as required.

    Qualifications

    Training and Experience

    • Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of an equivalent GED certificate, supplemented by one (1) year of responsible cement finisher or cement finisher's apprentice experience.

    **** Special Requirements

    • Possession of valid commercial driver's license, Class B with air brake endorsement.
    • Ability to successfully complete background and drug screenings.

    Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

    • Comprehensive knowledge of work methods, sequences, and techniques of cement work.
    • Ability to assemble and set forms to meet precise job specifications in accordance with type and shape of structures and material.
    • Understand use of reinforcement steel or wire and must be able to arrange reinforcement material to obtain maximum strength.
    • Know when cement is sufficiently vibrated to eliminate bubbles.
    • Thorough knowledge of the properties and characteristics of materials in order to determine proper mixtures and setting time.
    • Able to finish surfaces to specified desired finish and texture by such methods as rubbing with abrasive stone or applying a smooth coat of cement mortar.
    • Able to perform finishing work such as rolling curbs and shaping drainage areas.
