    The Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) is an independent nonprofit organization authorized by Congress in 2010. Its mission is to fund research that will provide patients, their caregivers and clinicians with the evidence-based information needed to make better-informed healthcare decisions. PCORI is committed to continually seeking input from a broad range of stakeholders to guide its work.

     

    POSITION SUMMARY 

     

    Working with PCORI colleagues, awardees, and stakeholders, the writer/editor will develop editorial products in print and digital formats for professional and lay/consumer audiences. 

     

    DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 

     

    • Develop (research/write/edit) reports, topic briefs, blog posts, feature stories, web/email content, slide sets, fact sheets, promotional materials, and other editorial products that advance PCORI’s mission and programmatic activities, for professional and lay/consumer audiences.
    • Review and edit materials developed by PCORI staff, awardees, freelancers, contractors, and others to ensure clarity, scientific accuracy, and appropriateness for intended audiences.
    • Prepare manuscripts for design and production.
    • Ensure editorial products meet PCORI quality and style standards, undergo all needed internal and external review, and are produced within established deadlines.
    • Collaborate and contribute subject matter expertise to inform strategic communication campaigns and efforts as a member of PCORI’s Communications team.
    • Perform additional duties and take on other responsibilities as dictated by events and circumstances.

    Required Skills

     

    • Exceptional writing and editing skills, including developmental editing, line editing, and copyediting, along with ability to shape and improve content for target audiences and repackage material for multiple uses. Excellent organizational, project, and content management skills and ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
    • Demonstrated storytelling ability to engage readers and build understanding of complex health issues. This ability would stretch from developing story pitches to writing and working with designers on illustrating the editorial piece.
    • Proven ability to handle multiple tasks, prioritize tasks, perform well under pressure, and meet deadlines and objectives.
    • Expertise in editing to various style standards, including Chicago Manual of Style and AMA Manual of Style.
    • Demonstrated ability to revise work based on editorial feedback.
    • Clear, strong, concise, and effective oral and written communications skills. Familiarity with digital and shared-workplace tools, including Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Teams, and SharePoint.

     

    Required Experience

     

    • Bachelor’s degree in communications, English, media, journalism or related field or a combination of education and requisite experience required.
    • At least three years of experience working for a health-related nonprofit organization, company, or agency.
    • Experience working with scientists, clinicians, and lay people to develop research-based professional articles, as well as content for lay audiences.
    • Experience with editorial review processes involving both internal and external content experts and stakeholders.
    • Experience with social and digital media, as well as strategic communications.
