To maintain, operate, and repair boilers and related equipment to ensure the safe heating of water.
Some of the responsibilities include:
Operating equipment: Starting and stopping boilers, engines, and auxiliary equipment
Monitoring systems: Reading gauges, meters, and charts to track boiler operations
Maintaining systems: Performing preventative maintenance on boilers, plumbing, heating, and ventilation systems
Adjusting systems: Activating valves to change the amount of water, air, and fuel in boilers
Inspecting equipment: Checking safety devices and ensuring equipment is operating efficiently
Recording data: Keeping logs of operation, maintenance, and safety activity
Troubleshooting: Correcting equipment malfunctions and responding to alarms
Maintaining cleanliness: Keeping the boiler room clean
Testing water: Testing water quality for signs of corrosion and determining water hardness
Ordering parts: Ordering and maintaining supply or replacement parts
Boiler operators will work independently, pay attention to detail, and have mechanical aptitude. They should also be familiar with safety regulations and be able to work in a team environment.
While some industry experience is helpful, practical experience with boiler operation is usually more important.
