Pharmacy Technician experience is required for this position.
Under regular supervision of a pharmacist, prepares medications including measuring, mixing, counting, labeling, and recording amounts and dosages of medications. Ensures customer satisfaction by handling each customer in a professional, courteous, and helpful manner.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.
1. Follows all company policies and procedures including register performance, security issues, and confidentiality.
2. Assists the pharmacist by receiving new written or electronic prescriptions or refill requests. Helps to verify that the following information is accurate and complete: date of birth, phone number, address, disease states, allergies, prescriber information, billing information, and the key components to a prescription.
3. Answers the telephone within two rings and handles requests within their job description including refill requests, new prescriptions, and general questions. Directs prescriber inquiries, prescription transfer requests, and patients’ medical questions, etc., to the pharmacist.
4. Reviews order list and creates daily task list; matches compounded products against outgoing orders.
5. Effectively uses pharmacy computer system to create and review formula logs as well as print labels, worksheets and manage inventory.
6. Ensures the correct formula preparation according to the prescription following quality assurance guidelines. Confirms with the pharmacist on duty that the formulation is correct in accordance to the script before starting the compounding preparation.
7. Uses proper compounding and labeling techniques emphasizing pharmaceutical elegance when making medications.
8. Prepares medications including emulsions, liquids, powders and ointments.
9. Follows proprietary formulations to compound commercially unavailable prescriptions into the appropriate dosage form
10. Sends prepared compound and documentation to supervising pharmacist for verification and sign off. Places and confirms that the beyond use date on the patient’s product label is correct. Ensures all relevant steps in each compound are verified with the supervising pharmacist.
11. Orders, labels, and counts inventory of medications, chemicals, and supplies, and enters inventory data into pharmacy computer software.
12. Maintains product inventory by reordering materials/products necessary for compounding processes.
13. Properly cleans work area and equipment upon completion of daily compounding. Ensures the compounding lab and related equipment are cleaned and maintained according to policy
14. Correctly uses and maintains all equipment necessary for preparing compounded products.
15. Routinely checks for outdated or soon to expire chemicals, commercially available products and compounded products
16. Selects proper packaging for compounded products i.e. correct bottle size, tube size, etc.
17. Understands and locates Material Safety Data Sheet “MSDS” guidelines for maintaining safety and managing safety events.
18. Locates and demonstrates general knowledge of Standard Operating Procedures (“SOP’s”).
19. Uses proper garbing techniques in accordance with SOP guidelines.
20. Understands and follows all USP 795/800 guidelines.
21. Understands medical terminology and pharmacy calculations.
22. Prepares prescriptions for deliveries and mail outs as necessary.
23. Maintains regular and punctual attendance. Develops courteous and professional relationships with patients, customers, and co-workers.
24. Performs other duties as assigned.
Pharmacy technicians must be nationally certified and registered with the Iowa Board of Pharmacy. Any person not currently registered with the Iowa Board of Pharmacy as a pharmacy technician or pharmacy technician trainee must obtain registration prior to commencing employment in an Iowa pharmacy.
