  • Responsibilities

    We are looking for an experienced chief operating officer to report directly to the owner to oversee the successful execution of the quarterly business plan. This position will be responsible for planning, organizing, directing, and controlling the day-to-day operations of the firm and for directing the implementation of firm systems in the service of meeting growth, revenue, and profitability goals. The position encompasses a wide range of activities with involvement in all phases of administration, personnel, finances, facilities, and business systems. We need someone with the experience and savvy to work closely with the owner and key staff on strategy, policy, problem-solving, and decision-making. Within the breadth of their operational leadership experiences, acceptable candidates must have successfully managed an annual budget of $9M-25M or more and a team of 22 to at least 50 with autonomy to hire and fire. The chief operating officer does not have the authority to practice law, give legal advice, or set strategy on a per-case/per-client basis - their focus is to coordinate efforts of marketing, sales, team, facility, technology, and finances to make strategic, profitable decisions that set the stage for extraordinary client work by the legal team. Why Work with Us? • You prize the opportunity to have a leadership position! • You want a healthy work culture with people who enjoy and support each other through exceptional teamwork and individual accountability • You would value the chance to collaborate with experienced C-Suite with legal industry expertise (COO, CMO, CRO, and Controller) to achieve firm goals and grow your skills • You want to participate in a national program for executives in the legal world that provides opportunities to develop critical industry-specific operational skills • You are excited to earn generous, performance-based, quarterly bonuses that reward your accomplishments • You value a 401K, with employer match and/or profit-sharing, for your retirement planning • You value a noncontributory cash balance plan for your retirement planning • You desire quality medical, vision, and dental insurance • You desire a health savings account for your retirement goals and build it out Responsibilities: First Foremost: Execute the firm’s business plan and meet quarterly gross revenue and profitability metrics by effectively developing the six parts of the business • Collaborate with the owner to design and implement business strategies, plans, and procedures • Evaluate performance by analyzing and interpreting data and metrics • Supervise the work of the non-lawyer support staff and vendors • Lead recruitment, hiring, onboarding, performance feedback, evaluations, and general human resources operations, including payroll and benefits • Ensure that the firm’s business policies and procedures are fully documented in writing, organized, deployed, and audited • Oversee operations informed by monthly financial reporting provided by the bookkeeping team and ongoing tax planning/preparation guidance from the CPAs. • Employ best practices and awareness of legal compliance to properly resource and effectively manage in-person, remote, hybrid, W2, and contract team members. • Ensure the digital plant is fully functional and secure, at all times, for the entire team • Respond to ongoing risk assessments to ensure the firm properly mitigates exposure • Manage project successfully by designing strategic tasks and leveraging process owners within set timelines • Demonstrate effective and healthy leadership strategies that build a positive professional culture, promote retention of performing team members, and recruit ‘A’ candidates to open positions quickly Qualifications: • Degree in management, business management, human resources, or related field • Prior experience running a professional services firm or a division or department of a mid-sized/large professional services firm with an annual budget no lower than $9M (law firm experience not required but is a plus) • SHRM or HRCI certifications are a plus! • Experience with ScalingUp is a plus You must be able to show evidence of your prior success with: • Managing a team of at least 30, with autonomy to hire and fire • Designing, monitoring, and reconciling a budget of at least $9 million (this is crucial) • Comfortability in, and passion for, a high-growth, entrepreneurial environment • Decision-making in a senior management role that highlights strong judgment • Designing, executing, monitoring, and achieving business plans • Using key financial reports to monitor and drive the business • Using leadership management best practices • Assuring the quality of workflow systems • Managing a wide variety of projects effectively • Leading people effectively, including recruiting the right people, developing them into great team members, and retaining them over time. This includes ensuring that all federal and state HR laws are followed and risks are minimized • Growing and developing professionally through formal and informal channels • Opening new, and managing multiple physical locations Compensation: $200,000 plus bonuses
