  • Responsibilities

    The purpose of this position is to repair and maintain a diverse fleet of automobiles, trucks, and construction equipment.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Diagnoses, repairs, and maintains light to heavy vehicles and construction equipment.
    • Operates computer diagnostic software, scanners, meters, pneumatic and hand tools.
    • Interprets schematics and uses repair manuals and software to effect repairs.
    • Performs minor fabrication/welding.
    • Transports vehicles to proper locations.
    • Performs North Carolina State safety and emission inspections, and federal Department of Transportation (DOT) inspections on trucks and trailers.
    • Operates the fleet management applet for technicians and enter repair types, time, and notes into work orders.
    • Maintains shop equipment and tools, cleans shop facility and disposes of hazardous and scrap material per appropriate regulations.

     

    SUPPLEMENTAL FUNCTIONS:

    • Performs other similar duties as required

    JOB SPECIFICATIONS AND QUALIFICATIONS:

     KNOWLEDGE:

    • Fleet parts and equipment
    • Diagnostic and repair methods of fleet vehicles and equipment
    • Fleet repair tools and materials

    LICENSING AND CERTIFICATIONS

    • Valid North Carolina Driver’s License
    • Valid North Carolina Class B Commercial Driver’s License
    • North Carolina State Inspectors License

    PLEASE NOTE: Applicants must meet the City criteria for an acceptable driving record.

    PREFERRED LICENSING AND CERTIFICATIONS:

    ASE Certification for Brakes and Preventative Maintenance

     

    WORKING CONDITIONS / PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

    • Positions in this class require: standing, fine dexterity, walking, lifting, carrying, reaching, handling, kneeling, crawling, pushing/pulling, climbing, vision, foot controls, balancing, crouching, hearing, twisting, talking.

    • Very Heavy: Exerting over 100 pounds occasionally, 50 - 100 pounds frequently, or from 20 up to 50 pounds constantly.

    • Incumbents may be subjected to extreme temperature, wetness and/or humidity, respiratory hazards, noise and vibration, physical hazards.

     MUST BE ABLE TO WORK DURING SECOND SHIFT THAT OPERATES MONDAY THROUGH THURSDAY, 2:00PM TO 12:30AM.

    Required Skills

    • Using mechanical repair tools
    • Reading diagrams and sketches for repair work
    • Communication, interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisor, the general public, etc. sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction

    Required Experience

    High school diploma or equivalency and six(6) months of advanced study, with at least one (1) year experience; or the City may consider an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job.

     

    STARTING PAY: $18.55
