JOB SUMMARY
This position is for young adults (16 and 17 years of age) to serve in a support function for fire ground operations.
MAJOR DUTIES
- Serves as a support function to fire ground operations by establishing water supply, providing equipment and gear to firefighters, and relaying messages.
- Attends classes and training sessions to improve firefighting and emergency medical skills.
- Performs related duties.
KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION
- Knowledge of fire prevention and suppression standards, practices, strategies, tactics, and apparatus.
- Knowledge of incident command principles and practices.
- Knowledge of departmental standard operating procedures, rules, and regulations.
- Skill in decision making and problem solving under routine and emergency conditions.
- Skill in the operation and use of fire equipment and apparatus.
- Skill in public and interpersonal relations.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT
- The employee frequently lifts light and heavy objects, climbs ladders, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, distinguishes between shades of color, and utilizes the sense of smell.
- The employee may be exposed to noise, machinery with moving parts, irritating chemicals, extreme temperatures, hazardous situations, and inclement weather. The work requires the use of protective clothing and devices.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Must be 16 or 17 years of age.
- Ability to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position.
- Ability to complete the medical and physical criteria as specified in the department’s Health and Fitness policy.
