Commercial Underwriter – Fresno

Job Summary
The Commercial Underwriter is responsible for underwriting agricultural, commercial business, and real estate loan requests while supporting the assigned business group. This role involves assessing the creditworthiness of individuals and businesses, analyzing financial data, and determining risk levels associated with extending credit. The underwriter works collaboratively with team members, provides recommendations, and ensures compliance with regulatory requirements. Additional responsibilities include monitoring renewals, reporting, and delinquency management.
Key Responsibilities
- Analyze commercial loan applications to determine eligibility and risk levels.
- Collaborate with Loan Officers to assess client needs and discuss financing options.
- Request and review additional financial information as needed and attend client meetings to provide credit expertise.
- Evaluate credit and financial data, including credit reports, tax returns, and financial statements, to determine credit risk.
- Generate financial ratios, cash flow projections, and conduct stress testing to assess loan viability.
- Perform comparative and trend analyses for businesses within the same industry and geographic location.
- Prepare clear and concise credit analyses, identifying repayment sources, key risks, and mitigating factors for loan approval presentations.
- Recommend credit approval requirements, including financial performance covenants, monitoring measures, and loan provisions.
- Ensure compliance with underwriting guidelines, policies, and regulatory requirements.
- Assist Loan Officers with credit extension memo updates.
- Coordinate with internal departments to support loan portfolio administration and collateral monitoring.
- Conduct annual loan reviews to assess borrower repayment ability, compliance with financial covenants, and collateral conditions.
- Train and mentor other underwriters, providing guidance on policies, processes, and systems.
- Review work from other underwriters for accuracy and thoroughness.
- Lead or participate in process improvement initiatives.
- Serve as a team lead for underwriters within the assigned workgroup when necessary.
- Perform additional duties and projects as assigned.
Supervisory Responsibilities
May oversee Credit Assistants, Credit Analysts, and/or other Commercial Underwriters as needed.
Required Skills & Qualifications
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities.
- In-depth understanding of local, state, and federal regulations related to commercial lending.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and financial analysis software.
- Ability to quickly learn and adapt to internal loan processing and management systems.
Education & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Ag Business, Finance, Business Administration, Accounting, or a related field.
- Alternatively, five years of related work experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
