Job Summary
Founded in 2022, Volant Programs Inc. is a Surplus Lines Wholesale Brokerage and Managing General Underwriter. Volant Programs provides a quick and nimble approach to meeting the needs of independent agents for select niche products. We launched our first delegated authority product February 2024 and have experience tremendous growth. We focus on Insuring Apartment Complexes in VA, NC, PA, MD, and DC.
We are seeking a Commercial Underwriter to join our team! As a Commercial Underwriter, you will be responsible for looking at a variety of insurance policies, assessing risks and rewards, and making potentially difficult decisions based on many different, complex factors. You will also be conducting research to best understand, analyze, and interpret incoming data, negotiate or compromise with clients or other underwriters, and maintain the highest level of integrity while following all company and state regulations. The ideal candidate has excellent problem-solving and organizational skills, can communicate effectively both orally and in writing, and understands insurance policies and terminology.
Job Description:
The primary function of the underwriter is to determine acceptability and pricing of business within assigned underwriting authority. Also, to manage production of acceptable business from assigned producers. Analyze information on new, renewal, and endorsement business to accept, price, modify or reject business within delegated underwriting authority. Recognize submissions that exceed underwriting authority and refers them on to the appropriate personnel for their review.
Conduct agents/brokers visitations, internal and external, to establish and maintain contacts and develop additional business
Participate in Agency Underwriting Audits
Review and analyze communications from other departments and successfully applies that information to underwriting issues within the underwriting department
Show competency and knowledge of current market trends, conditions and competition in the marketplace
Respond to regulatory and compliance issues
Train and mentor Underwriting Assistants as assigned
Perform other duties as requested by management
Ability to interact with others in a professional manner
Minimum Experience/Education:
Bachelor's degree or equivalent is preferred, an equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
Minimum of 1-4 years of commercial package underwriting experience required.
Regularly and consistently demonstrates commitment to company values and guiding principles.
Proficient with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
Commercial rating experience desired but not required.
Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
Strong organizational skills
Strong attention to detail
Good communication skills, both written and orally
Familiarity with insurance policies and terminology helpful
