    Job Summary:

    Under general supervision, this position primarily performs tasks related to information collection, dissemination, public engagement, and education. The role involves strategic communication to enhance transparency, ensure public awareness of city services, policies, and activities, and educate the public on important city matters. The Communication Specialist reports to the City Clerk.

    Job Duties:

    • Make timely announcements through appropriate communication methods regarding service interruptions, new policies, meetings, new services, safety reminders, and other important updates (including outside of business hours when needed).
    • Maintain an engaging and professional social media presence (currently focused on Facebook, with potential for expansion).
    • Serve as the primary point of contact for media inquiries, build relationships with reporters, and provide background information as needed.
    • Monitor public conversations on platforms like Facebook and advise city officials on common misunderstandings and concerns, offering strategic communication solutions.
    • Manage and enhance the city's WordPress-based website (200+ pages) to ensure accurate and accessible information.
    • Set up and manage online streaming equipment to broadcast city council meetings.
    • Develop and implement communication strategies to educate the public on:
      • City services and operations
      • Legal and policy frameworks governing the city
      • Revenue sources and budgetary constraints
      • The tradespeople and professionals working behind the scenes

    Qualifications

    Education and Experience:

    • Bachelor’s degree (B.A./B.S.) in English, Journalism, Communications, Marketing, Public Relations or other related field from a four-year college or university; supplemented by a minimum of two (2) years related experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

    Skills and Abilities:

    • Proficiency in graphic design tools (such as Adobe Creative Suite or Canva) and communication software.
    • Excellent writing, editing, and verbal communication skills.
    • Proficiency in social media management and website maintenance (WordPress preferred).
    • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects efficiently while meeting deadlines."
    • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
    • Creative thinker with attention to detail and a passion for storytelling.
    • Ability to work independently, prioritize tasks, and engage with the community effectively.
    • Willingness to work outside of regular business hours when necessary.
    • Hybrid work options may be available based on job requirements and supervisor approval.

    Work Environment

    • Primarily an office setting with occasional outdoor or off-site duties.
    • May require work outside of regular business hours in response to urgent communication needs.
    • Occasionally lifts up to 10 pounds.
