The Oceanographic Data Manager will support the Naval Oceanographic Office (NAVOCEANO) by providing database, documentation, and quality-control support. Duties include maintenance of the Oceanographic and Atmospheric Master Library (OAML), which provides standardized databases and algorithms that handle Navy platform collected in-situ oceanographic data and Tactical Decision Aid (TDA) supplied climatological databases.
The duty location is at Stennis Space Center in Mississippi. Applicants must be eligible to obtain a Department of Defense security clearance.
JOB DUTIES:
- Maintain several OAML software and database entries for NAVOCEANO’s Oceanographic Department
- Monitor database performance and stability
- Document science and mathematics behind models and algorithms
- Document code
- Evaluate and document test cases
- Load data for any in-situ physical oceanographic observations
- Identify backlog of unarchived survey data, then download and review
- Perform quality checks, data archival, and data backup
- Submit regular progress reports summarizing accomplishments
Required Skills
- Database experience
- Ability to obtain and maintain a DoD security clearance
Required Experience
- Associate degree in Computer Science/Engineering, Oceanography, Geographic Information Sciences (GIS), or another relevant technical field
- Two (2) years of experience with oceanographic data, data structures, or database management
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience with OAML constituent databases
- Oceanographic data or modeling
- GIS software packages (e.g., Esri ArcGIS, QGIS)
- Programming languages such as C++, Java, Python
- Familiarity with both Windows and Linux/Unix operating systems
- Scientific programming languages or scientific data display systems (MATLAB, R)
- Security+ certification
- Self-motivated yet able to work well within a development team
- Strong oral and written communication skills
