    About the Position

    The Conservation Propagator at Mt. Cuba Center is a key role responsible for executing the organization's plant propagation initiatives. This position requires a skilled practitioner who can elevate Mt. Cuba's propagation capabilities, drive conservation outcomes, and significantly enhance our research impact through innovative approaches. The Conservation Propagator coordinates the activities necessary to source, collect, and process propagules. They work closely with the Greenhouse & Nursery Manager to create a schedule that produces plants for research programs, display, conservation partnerships, plant sales, and other mission-based needs. They manage the collection of all propagation data and develop protocols from the findings. The Conservation Propagator proactively engages with external stakeholders to collaborate on conservation propagation projects and knowledge development. The ideal candidate will be a strategic thinker with a proven track record in native plant propagation and industry engagement. Working collaboratively with the Conservation and Research team, this role will be instrumental in articulating and achieving Mt. Cuba's conservation objectives.

    Essential Functions of the Role

    The following outlines key responsibilities of the role, though not exhaustive. Percentages indicate the approximate time and capacity to be devoted to each area:

    Propagation Programs Management [60%]

    • Source, scout, and collect propagules for propagation programs
    • Oversee germination and rooting procedures to produce required plants on schedule
    • Research, trial, and implement best propagation practices
    • Maintain propagation areas to high organization and cleanliness standards
    • Support Mt. Cuba's wild collected and rare plant initiatives
    • Collaborate on plant conservation projects with external partners
    • Guide employees, interns, and/or volunteers performing propagation tasks

    Propagation Data Management & Engagement [25%]

    • Manage propagation requests and accessioning
    • Assure propagation data integrity through rigorous protocols
    • Research, develop, and publish propagation protocols
    • Develop industry contacts and represent Mt. Cuba's propagation efforts
    • Collaborate with nursery and conservation communities on research priorities

    Greenhouse and Production Support [15%]

    • Act as primary back-up to the Greenhouse & Nursery Manager
    • Support plant production with regular coverage as needed

    Major Objectives/Projects for the First 6-12 Months

    • Master Mt. Cuba-specific workflows and processes related to propagation and plant records
    • Take ownership of execution of existing propagation requests for garden, conservation partners, research, and plant sales
    • Outline long range propagation research goals in collaboration with Greenhouse & Nursery Manager

    Education and Experience

    • Bachelor's degree in horticulture, botany, or related plant science field
    • Minimum of 5 years' experience in plant propagation, conservation horticulture, or related field
    • Demonstrated track record of developing, executing, and documenting propagation protocols

    • Sound working knowledge of plant identification, propagation techniques, and environmental factors affecting plant growth
    • Demonstrated ability in native plant propagation

    • Proficiency in researching propagation literature and applying findings
    • Strong data collection and management skills
    • Excellent interpersonal and relationship-building abilities
    • Self-motivation and attention to detail
    • Willingness to work flexible hours, including weekends, holidays, and special events as needed

    About the Role: Compensation, Benefits, and Perks

    • Salary commensurate with experience, starting range: $57,000 - 67,000
    • Full-time W-2 role requiring 40+ hours per week with a 5-day work schedule
    • Primarily On-Site with Occasional Remote - Most work is done on-site, but employees may work remotely occasionally as needed for special circumstances
