SUMMARY OF POSITION: Under minimal supervision, responsible for providing educational interpreting/transliterating services for students/staff at the post-secondary level in a variety of situations. Sign Language Interpreters provide a variety of direct and indirect services to students and consumers with disabilities as needed. This is a 9-month position, which starts in the middle of August, and ends in the middle of May.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Working in a team-oriented environment, must utilize sound judgement, and maintain appropriate boundaries while providing interpreting/transliterating services.
Duties include:
- Maintain professional licensure as an interpreter in the state of Idaho.
- Adhere to RID’s Code of Professional Conduct by maintaining a high level of professional interpreter ethics and integrity in dealing with confidential information and with the general nature of services provided.
- Interpret/transliterate from sign-to-voice and voice-to-sign.
- Develop and expand technical skills and professionalism as an educational interpreter.
- Develop a working knowledge of the standards and practices of service to students with disabilities in higher education, especially pertaining to Deaf/Hard of Hearing community.
- Provide courteous and professional support to students and faculty, while maintaining appropriate boundaries.
- Maintain courteous, professional, and effective relationships with fellow CSI employees.
- Be sufficiently adaptable to accept a work schedule that is variable depending on student need.
- Work the hours/shifts as assigned, being punctual.
- Attend Disability Support Staff meetings and trainings as scheduled.
- Provide test reader and scribe services as needed.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS AND/OR SKILLS:
Prefer minimum of a Bachelor degree in any ASL interpreting/transliterating field, and/or equivalent experience in a similar work environment in addition to the following:
- Must have a current Interpreter License or Provisional Permit issued by the state of Idaho (Idaho Code 54-2916 to 54-2919).
- Experience in and ability to collaborate in team interpreting situations.
- Ability to execute voice to sign/sign to voice interpretation and transliteration fitting the demand of postsecondary learning and teaching environments.
- Must stay current with new philosophies and best practices in the field of educational interpreting and the advocacy, support and empowerment of persons with disabilities.
- Sufficient knowledge and understanding of the content in a variety of areas of study in higher education in order to provide accurate and meaningful interpretation/transliteration
- Must be available to work hours specified by the students’ classes and study schedules.
- Experience and comfort working with persons with a variety of disabilities.
- Skills and willingness to work in collaboration with a variety of professionals.
- Must be able to communicate effectively in oral and written English.
- Have basic computer and office skills.
- Valid Idaho driver’s license.
WORKING CONDITIONS AND/OR PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Classroom, lab, fieldtrips/extra-curricular activities, and some travel may be required out of the area to CSI outreach centers and conferences; may be some evening and weekend assignments. Travel is reimbursable at the CSI rate.
