    Job Summary:

    The Design Manager will be responsible for planning, organizing, and directing the design activities for the School Upgrade Program and critical repair projects. This position serves as the lead design professional in the Design Department, ensuring quality review, adherence to policies and procedures, and coordination with the Division of State Architects (DSA). The Design Manager will oversee the design process for multiple projects, from conception to final review, ensuring all projects comply with required standards and guidelines.

    Key Responsibilities:

    Lead the design activities for the School Upgrade Program and critical repair projects.

    Oversee the design review process to ensure designs meet functional program, budget, environmental, and legal requirements.

    Coordinate with architects, consultants, and personnel through the design process, from project conception to final approval.

    Ensure that all designs comply with relevant standards and meet both educational and building requirements.

    Establish an efficient and effective design review process to provide value for the budget and meet community expectations.

    Review and approve architectural firm assignments from a pre-qualified list.

    Provide direction to architects regarding project goals, objectives, schedule, and budget.

    Maintain a timely decision-making process to keep projects on track.

    Document and ensure that all steps meet legal requirements.

    Manage and review design changes, ensuring projects remain within budget.

    Participate in community outreach programs to support acceptance of building projects.

    Coordinate design activities with various departments including Environmental Health and Safety, A/E Design Services, Maintenance and Operations, and others.

    Develop continuing education opportunities for staff to share knowledge and best practices.

    Perform additional duties as assigned.

    Minimum Requirements:

    Experience:

    At least 10 years of professional experience in managing facilities design or capital projects, including design, contract administration, cost estimating, and scheduling.

    A minimum of 5 years of experience in the design, planning, and construction of educational facilities or similar public agency projects.

    Education:

    Bachelor's degree in architecture or engineering from a recognized college or university.

    Preferred Certifications:

    Valid Certificate of Registration as an Architect by the California State Architectural Board, or as a Professional Engineer by the State Board for Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors.
