  • Responsibilities

    We are seeking a detail-oriented and highly organized Controller to oversee all financial operations of Electronic Media Group, Inc. This position will play a key role in managing accounting functions, implementing financial controls, preparing financial reports, and supporting strategic decision-making. The Controller will ensure accurate financial reporting, regulatory compliance, and effective financial planning processes within the organization.

    Electronic Media Group (EMG) consists of two companies: Ingredient and Stunt Puppy.

    Stunt Puppy designs, manufactures and sells gear for active dogs and their owners. Over 90% of its products are manufactured with its own employees and machines right in Minneapolis. Flexibility, customization and outstanding service have made the brand of dog-lovers all over the country.

    What you'll do:

    • Financial Reporting :
      • Prepare accurate and timely monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements
      • Ensure all financial reporting aligns with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP)
      • Prepare and review internal financial reports for management, ensuring clarity and actionable insights
    • Accounting Operations : * Manage day-to-day accounting operations, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and general ledger * Oversee the administration and compliance of the company's 401(k) plan * Implement and enforce accounting procedures and controls to maintain accuracy and efficiency * Oversee the month-end and year-end closing processes to ensure financial records are complete and accurate * Coordinate with external accounting firm to assist them in preparing year-end tax returns and other financial related requests
    • Budgeting and Forecasting : * Develop and manage annual budgets and forecasts in collaboration with senior management * Track actual performance against budgeted targets and provide variance analysis * Prepare financial models to support decision-making, growth strategies, and cost-control initiatives
    • Compliance and Risk Management : * Ensure compliance with all federal, multi-state, and local tax regulations, payroll and accounting standards * Coordinate with external auditors during audits and assist in preparing audit schedules and supporting documentation, if necessary * Oversee tax filings, including income taxes, sales tax, payroll taxes, and any other required filings
    • Internal Controls and Process Improvement : * Establish and maintain strong internal controls to safeguard company assets and ensure financial accuracy * Identify opportunities for process improvements and cost-saving initiatives, and implement necessary changes
    • Team Management and Development : * Lead, mentor, and develop the financial staff * Provide training and support to accounting staff to enhance their skills and knowledge * Delegate tasks and responsibilities effectively to ensure the timely completion of financial processes
    • Cash Flow and Treasury Management : * Monitor cash flow, ensuring liquidity for operational needs and capital expenditures

    What you bring:

    • Degree in Accounting, Finance, or equivalent experience
    • Minimum of 8-10 years of progressive experience in accounting or finance roles, including at least 3 years in a supervisory or leadership position
    • Proven experience with financial statement preparation, budgeting, and financial analysis
    • Strong understanding of accounting principles, financial reporting, and auditing processes
    • Expertise in accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks Online)
    • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel (pivot tables, v-lookups, and financial modeling)
    • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills
    • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate with internal teams and external clients
    • Ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines in a fast-paced environment
    • Legal authorization to work in the U.S. for any employer

    Additional Preferred Qualifications:

    • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or Chartered Accountant (CA)
    • Experience working in an advertising/marketing company or professional services firm is a plus

    Annual salary

    In the spirit of pay transparency, we are excited to share the salary range for this position is $100K-$120K exclusive of benefits mentioned above. Your compensation will be determined based on factors such as geographic location, skills, education, and/or experience. In addition to those factors, we believe in the importance of pay equity and consider internal equity of our current team members as a part of any final offer.

    This is a hybrid position, with the opportunity to work remotely part-time. Generally, we would like someone who is available to be in person in our Northeast Minneapolis offices 2-3 days per week during our core hours of 9am-5pm.
