    Description

Emergent Automation / North American Automation is looking for skilled controls engineers with a strong programming background to expand the electronic control systems team. Controls Engineers are responsible for developing, testing, and troubleshooting control and interface (HMI) software, predominantly for Red Lion systems in the C programming language. There are also opportunities for microcontroller programming in C. Other programming and hardware-related opportunities are also available within the job scope, but they will be a rarity.

You’ll have the opportunity to touch new products at every step of the process: scoping, prototyping, development, testing, and deployment. There’s plenty to do – your only limitations here will be your enthusiasm and desire to learn.

    Qualifications

    • Computer programming experience is critical to this role, C strongly preferred unless the candidate can demonstrate sufficient proficiency in another low-level software language and the capacity to transfer that experience to a C-based codebase.
    • Highly skilled in communicating issues and working with a team to complete projects and implement corrective actions.
    • Proven ability to create novel and robust solutions to existing problems.
    • Proven ability to work rapidly and accurately under time pressure.
    • Preferred experience with electrohydraulic systems.
    • Direct experience with design and implementation of fault-tolerant systems with error handling and recovery.
    • Strong understanding or willingness to learn/implement UI/UX principles to HMI development.
    • Strong working knowledge or willingness to learn about designing robust power systems based on batteries, solar power, and AC/DC conversion.
    • Strong working knowledge of industrial control networks, including but not limited to Ethernet/IP, Modbus, RS-232, RS-485 and Serial.
    • Moderate to strong working knowledge of PLC and controls programming, Instrumentation and Controls design, reference-based programming, electronic troubleshooting.
    • Knowledge of VFDs is a plus.
    • Familiarity with cloud-based telemetry systems and interfaces, including MQTT-based telemetry, cellular systems and/or IOT cellular solutions.
    • Familiarity with electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and circuit analysis/design and RF systems are a bonus.
    • Accredited Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, Computer Science, or equivalent experience.

    Responsibilities and duties

    • Develop, implement, and test communications solutions between Red Lion control systems, as well as external controllers, sensors, pumps, motors, VFDs, PLCs, etc. as required to complete a project.
    • Occasionally develop, implement, and test software solutions for non-Red Lion based controllers displays, and RTOS software running on microcontrollers and ARM devices in C.
    • Identify, troubleshoot, and resolve bugs, corner cases, and reported field problems as required to ensure product success.
    • Participate in real-time root cause analysis and troubleshooting/resolution work for equipment failures in the field.
    • Travel up to 20% is possible to support product deployment.
