Counsel - Environmental & Mass Tort Practice | Any U.S. Office (Preferred: CA or TX)
Our client, a global law firm with a forward-thinking, industry-focused strategy, is seeking an experienced Environmental Attorney with 8+ years of experience to join its Environmental & Mass Tort team. This role supports complex, high-profile, and high-value energy, infrastructure, and project development transactions, particularly those at the intersection of law, policy, and innovation, including energy transition projects and carbon markets.
The position is open to candidates in any U.S. office, with a preference for those with California or Texas experience.
Key Responsibilities:
Project & Facility Permitting:
Secure permits related to air, water, wetlands, UIC, and offshore facilities
Experience with utility-scale renewable energy and power development projects is highly valued
Environmental Review & Compliance:
Manage NEPA and CEQA environmental reviews
Coordinate with consultants and regulatory agencies to align with development timelines
Contaminated Site Management:
Counsel on CERCLA, RCRA, and state waste and remediation programs
Focus on real estate and development risk mitigation
Transactional Due Diligence:
Support project finance and M&A transactions
Conduct diligence and negotiate environmental risk provisions in financing and purchase agreements
Draft compliance covenants, representations, warranties, and indemnities
Lender & Sponsor Coordination:
Advise on permitting status, compliance assessments, and bankability risk mitigation
Work closely with project finance counsel, developers, and lenders
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience reviewing Phase I/II ESAs, wetlands delineations, biological assessments, cultural resource surveys
Familiarity with title and survey review as it relates to environmental conditions and use restrictions
Knowledge of land use law, Endangered Species Act, PUC processes, and habitat conservation planning
Experience in carbon capture and storage (CCS), carbon markets, and energy transition projects
Exposure to cross-border infrastructure projects and international environmental compliance
