The crane mechanic will keep equipment available for use by inspecting and testing cranes and vehicles; completing preventive maintenance such as ,engine tune-ups, oil changes, tire rotation and changes, wheel balancing and replacing filters. Maintains vehicle records by recording service and repairs. Diagnose vehicles based on observational and mechanical testing as well as information provided by Supervisor. Repair vehicles based on the diagnosed issues and repair estimate. Test drive vehicles after repairs are complete to ensure mechanical soundness and to determine whether any other problems exist.

Analyzes malfunctions and repairs, rebuilds, and maintains construction equipment, such as cranes, power shovels, scrapers, paving machines, motor graders, trench-digging machines, conveyors, bulldozers, dredges, pumps, compressors and pneumatic tools: Operates and inspects machines or equipment to diagnose defects.

Dismantles and reassembles equipment, using hoists and hand tools.

Examines parts for damage or excessive wear, using micrometers and gauges.

Replaces defective engines and subassemblies, such as transmissions.

Tests overhauled equipment to ensure operating efficiency.

Welds broken parts and structural members.

May direct workers engaged in cleaning parts and assisting with assembly and disassembly of equipment.
