Required Skills
The following tasks are performed by Crane Operators:
- Operate cranes, cherry pickers, or other moving equipment to lift and move loads, such as machinery or bulk materials
- Inspects cables and grappling devices for wear, and installs or replaces cables
- Directs helpers engaged in placing blocking and outrigging under crane when lifting loads
- Loads and unloads bundles from trucks, barges, and trains, using moving equipment
- Inspects and compares load weights with lifting capacity to ensure against overload
- Cleans, lubricates, and maintains mechanisms, such as cables, pulleys, and grappling devices
- Read load charts
- Performs other related duties as required
The following knowledge is required to skillfully perform the job of Crane Operator:
- Must be a Certified Crane Operator and able to provide proof of certification
- Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses repair, and maintenance.
- Knowledge of company safety policies and procedures to comply with company, local, state, and/or federal laws
The following skills are required to perform the job of Crane Operator:
- Controlling operations of equipment or systems
- Determining the kind of tools and equipment needed to perform a job
- Installing equipment, machines, wiring, or programs to meet specifications
- Monitor gauges, dials, or other indicators to make certain equipment is working properly
- Performing routine maintenance on equipment and determining when and what type of maintenance is needed
- Generating or adapting equipment and technology to serve user needs
- Determining causes of operating errors and providing solutions
- Conducting tests and inspections of work to evaluate quality or performance
- Determining how a system should work and how changes in conditions, operation, and the environment will affect outcomes
- Ability to operate a two-way radio
The following physical demands are required to perform the job of Crane Operator:
- Ability to quickly and repeatedly adjust the controls of a machine to the exact position
- Occasional bending, stooping, twisting, crawling, kneeling
- Occasional climbing of ladders
- Occasional lifting up to 50 pounds from ground to waist level
- Occasional lifting between 50 to 100 pounds
- Occasional repetitive use of non-powered hand tools
- Occasional repetitive use of vibrating hand tools
- Constant repetitive hand, forearm, foot, and leg activities
- Constant sitting
- Repetitive movement of arms, legs, and torso together when the whole body is in motion
- Frequent work in dusty environments
- Frequent work in areas of excessive noise
- Work variable hours including overtime hours as needed
