ABOUT THE ROLE
Position Overview: As the Curriculum Specialist, you will:
Serve as a key educational leader for academic interventions, including Elev8 Freedom School Summer Literacy Program
Provide full-time guidance, support, and training to youth development staff. In this role you:
Be responsible for planning, updating, and implementing curriculum and literacy resources that align with the program’s mission to support children’s literacy and social-emotional growth.
Function as a coach and mentor, ensuring staff have the skills, resources, and support needed to deliver a high-quality academic interventions year-round.
Please Note: This is a grant-funded position.
Compensation: $96,000 annual salary, plus competitive benefits including generous paid time off, health benefits, company-paid life and disability benefits, as well as 403(b) retirement plan and employer contribution once eligibility criteria is met.
Travel:
Some local travel will be needed, and possibility of out of state travel for conferences
Primary Responsibilities:
Collaborate with program senior leadership to design and refine/update the Elev8 Freedom School summer literacy curriculum, including literacy-focused activities, enrichment components, and culturally responsive resources.
Update and modify the existing curriculum as needed to ensure it remains current, engaging, and aligned with program goals and literacy standards.
Coordinate and support the curriculum committee
Recruit & support youth reviewers
Provide ongoing update to senior leadership
Develop, curate, and organize program resources (lesson plans, instructional materials, digital tools, etc.) for distribution to youth development staff.
Create a centralized library of resources accessible to all staff and ensure timely updates and additions.
Assess the effectiveness of existing resources and identify areas where new resources or materials are needed.
Place annual book order aligned with grant and student enrollment
Update and coordinate with program team standardized curriculum materials
Design and facilitate pre-summer training sessions, workshops, and ongoing professional development programs to equip staff with the skills, tools, and strategies needed to implement the curriculum.
Provide and/or coordinate training on instructional best practices, literacy pedagogy, classroom management, and social-emotional learning.
Assess training needs through surveys, observations, or staff feedback and adjust training materials accordingly.
Serve as an on-site instructional coach, providing individualized support, modeling lessons, and offering feedback to youth development staff on literacy instruction.
Conduct classroom observations to identify strengths, areas for improvement, and support ongoing staff development.
Facilitate reflective discussions with staff to improve teaching practices, build instructional confidence, and address challenges in implementing the curriculum.
Gather data on student learning outcomes, staff satisfaction, and program effectiveness through surveys, assessments, and observation notes.
Use data and feedback to recommend adjustments to curriculum, training methods, or coaching practices.
Collaborate with leadership to establish goals, benchmarks, and success metrics for program improvement.
Qualifications:
Master’s degree in Education preferred, Curriculum and Instruction, Reading Specialist, or a related field
Bachelor's degree required
Professional teaching certification required
Reading or literacy endorsement preferred
Certification in Maryland preferred
3-5 years of experience developing, implementing and modifying curriculum
Strong knowledge of science of reading, pedagogy, strategies, and best practices.
Experience in facilitating professional learning opportunities to youth and adult learners
Strong understanding of State standards and culturally relevant curriculum
Proficiency with data collection and analysis with the ability to use data to inform decisions
Excellent communication, organizational, interpersonal, and leadership skills
Ability to manage multiple tasks and prioritize effectively in a dynamic environment
Must be willing to travel and work flexible hours, including some evenings and weekends
