The Detroit Justice Center (DJC), an innovative community law practice, seeks a part time Associate Producer. DJC is founded on the belief that we cannot build cities that work for everyone without remedying the impacts of mass incarceration and transforming our justice system. This position is a unique opportunity to support DJC in its mission to deliver community lawyering services, create economic opportunities, and promote just cities. POSITION OVERVIEW:
The Detroit Justice Center seeks an organized, creative individual with a passion for social justice and narrative shifting media to join our dynamic staff. We are looking for someone who wants to sharpen their skillset around professional audio/media production and marketing skills to work on our podcast “Freedom Dreams”. This position will be 20 hours a week, focused exclusively on the podcast. The associate producer will be working closely with our podcast producer and will report directly to our Communications Manager. DJC will onboard the Associate Producer for remote work during the Covid-19 pandemic.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
PRODUCING RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:
Work with hosts and lead producer to develop episodes
Coordinate logistics and booking remote recordings for host and guests
Manage all aspects of recording sessions and day-to-day production schedule
Research history and stats for hosts
Search internet and libraries for archival audio
Participate in feedback sessions with the production team
Effectively and efficiently coordinate resources and workflows
Juggle multiple editorial and organizational tasks, ensuring publishing, asset, and media delivery deadlines are met
Manage and analyze episode data, transcriptions, and other publishing and file management
CANDIDATES WILL GET TRAINED TO EDIT AND EVENTUALLY TAKE OVER:
Cutting tape
Editing for pace
Scoring episodes
Create audio and visual marketing materials
MARKETING RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:
Reach out to and develop relationships with like-minded podcasts and organizations for organic cross promotion opportunities
Reach out to and develop relationships with podcast and justice-oriented press, newsletters, etc. to request they feature Freedom Dreams in their coverage
Develop and manage Freedom Dreams’ digital platforms including social media and website
QUALIFICATIONS:
Proven passion for podcast, audio, multimedia, or broadcast content creation, with at least 2 years of experience as a Producer or team leader
Flexibility to work hours matching the production schedule, based on deadlines
Analytical, self-motivated, enthusiastic, and creative
Excellent research skills
Enthusiasm for learning and working with a small, close-knit, and highly collaborative team
An ability to listen to raw tape and identify moments that make a story and/or interview compelling
Hyper-attention to detail
Exceptional organizational and time management skills
Knowledge/experience of justice issues and passion for DJC’s mission and values; and
Knowledge of MS Office Suite and Google products; experience with case management software and web conferencing software (e.g. Google Meet, Zoom) a plus.
This is a part-time position, and the target salary for this role is $20,800. As a part-time position, the selected candidate will not be eligible for benefits.
