    Direct Support Professional (DSP) – Residential Adult Developmental Services

    A Direct Support Professional (DSP) is needed at a residential facility serving adults with developmental and intellectual disabilities in Charlottesville.

    This role provides direct support to adults across residential facilities in the area, with flexible schedules (day, evening, overnight, and weekend shifts are available).

    The program caters to individuals struggling with developmental disabilities such as intellectual disabilities, autism, epilepsy, and cerebral palsy.

    Salary and Benefits:

    • Starting pay range: $16.54 - $18.00+ (higher rates offered to experienced candidates)
    • Shift differentials:
      • Monday-Thursday, 5 pm - 8 am: +$2/hour
      • Weekend shifts (Friday 5 pm - Monday 8 am): +$2/hour
    • Paid Time Off: 38 days total (Vacation: 12 days, Sick time: 12 days, Holidays: 11 days, 3 floating holidays)

    Responsibilities:

    • Ensure the health and safety of consumers, providing both planned and emergency services.
    • Counsel and manage client behaviors through prevention, de-escalation of aggression, and the use of restraints when necessary.
    • Facilitate community integration activities and teach targeted skills both in the house and in the community.
    • Assist with the self-administration of consumer medications.
    • Provide a person-centered approach to services, focusing on community engagement and full inclusion of adults with disabilities.
    • Assist, supervise, or train consumers in personal care skills (i.e. toileting, showering, tooth-brushing, medications, etc.).
    • Perform CPR/First Aid/Crisis intervention in emergencies as per training guidelines.
    • Record data on individual performance across a range of educational and behavioral programs.
    • Perform direct care responsibilities independently at any designated site.

    Requirements:

    • High School Diploma or GED (2 years of experience in a human services field preferred)
    • VALID DRIVERS LICENSE AND CLEAN DRIVING RECORD - Please see below for "Acceptable Driving Record" Requirements. Transporting clients is part of this role and proof of vehicle insurance is also required if you have your own vehicle. 
    • Knowledge of developmental disabilities such as intellectual disabilities, autism, epilepsy, and cerebral palsy
    • Ability to work with a wide variety of individuals and respond to crisis situations
    • Certifications in CPR, First Aid, and medication administration (or willingness to complete training)

    Acceptable Drivers Requirement: 

    Policy

    All employees and non-employees who transport persons we serve in their personal vehicles must maintain personal automobile insurance and meet the criteria of an acceptable driver. The employer carries an excessive automobile liability policy. This policy covers liability expenses that exceed staff personal automobile liability insurance limits. Vehicle insurance for agency-owned vehicles is the responsibility of the Employer.

    Exceptions to the following criteria must be approved in writing by the Director of Human Resources.

    1. Acceptable Drivers must have:

      1. current valid Virginia Driver’s License.
      2. proof of insurance

    2. Driving privileges will be automatically denied if involved in one or more of the following occurrences during the previous three-year period:

      1. reckless or negligent driving violations
      2. DUI/DWI violations
      3. homicide by vehicle, negligent homicide, or involuntary manslaughter
      4. fleeing or attempting to elude police officers
      5. driving without an issued license or while license is suspended or revoked
      6. hit and run or failure to stop after an accident
      7. evading responsibility after an accident
      8. major speeding (20 or more mph over limit)
