SUMMARY
The Director, Moot Court Training is a staff position that provides opportunities to use initiative and mature judgment in a variety of management tasks designed to support and advance the Advocacy Program and the law school.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
• Help to supervise and mentor competition teams preparing for national moot court tournaments.
• Work with the Vice President, Advocacy to recruit moot court coaches.
• Train, directly supervise, and mentor coaches working with moot court teams.
• Provide administrative support for moot court coaches and teams, including setting practice round schedules and recruiting volunteers to serve as practice round judges.
• Help to implement curriculum for appellate advocacy courses.
• Recruit attorneys and advocacy scholars for break-out sessions of advocacy classes.
• Prepare and deliver lectures on appellate advocacy skills.
• Oversee the process of educating coaches and students about applicable law school policies.
• Oversee and plan for orientations each semester for moot court students and coaches.
• Help to oversee planning for regional competitions the Advocacy Program hosts for other schools.
• Help to oversee planning for and execution of the South Texas Mock Trial Challenge.
• Help the Director, Trial Training to secure courtrooms for the South Texas Mock Trial Challenge.
• Recruit judges for the South Texas Mock Trial Challenge.
• Act as a South Texas College of Law Houston representative to the national advocacy community.
• Participate in strategic planning and implementation of programs designed to further the Advocacy Program’s mission.
• Work with the Vice President, Advocacy and the Office of Philanthropy and Alumni Engagement to engage alumni of the Advocacy Program.
• Work with the Vice President, Advocacy and the Marketing Department to market the Advocacy Program.
• Coordinate efforts with the Vice President, Advocacy on a regular basis.
• Comply with all aspects of the Law Schools Customer Service Standards.
• Generally, help to advance the mission of the law school and the Advocacy Program.
• Complete other job duties as assigned.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
Supervise and support adjunct Advocacy Coaches working with competition teams.

Must be computer literate with proficiency in MS Office applications (Word, Excel and PowerPoint) with ability to learn new programs as necessary. Must be detail-oriented and have the ability to work independently.
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
J.D. degree required. Experience in an advocacy coach role preferred. At least five years of practice experience preferred.
LANGUAGE SKILLS
Proficient in both spoken and written English. Ability to interpret and explain complex data. Ability to effectively and professionally communicate in one-on-one and small group situations to students, alumni, clients, and other employees of the organization.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to perform basic to intermediate math essentials. Must possess the ability to analyze numerical data and detect patterns, errors, and trends.
REASONING ABILITY
Ability to define routine problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions to solve routine problems and/or deal with a variety of variables in situations, especially when the department head may be out of the office or unavailable. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
Licensed to practice law in Texas or eligible for admission to the Texas Bar by reciprocity.

Extremely fast-paced, multi-tasking, non-smoking work environment. Must be able to work the general business schedule of the law school (9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.) plus evenings and weekends as needed.

The Advocacy Program at South Texas College of Law Houston operates to create, foster, and assist advocacy training. While South Texas has a long-standing reputation for excellence in national moot court and mock-trial competitions, the Advocacy Program has grown and matured to reflect the evolving nature of the provision of skills training in legal education.
