The Director of Business Development drives the firm’s growth strategy by identifying, cultivating, and managing strategic client relationships. The role focuses on building and maintaining a robust pipeline of qualified prospects and projects aligned with the organization’s business plan, ultimately expanding the client base and securing new design commissions.
Essential Functions of Director of Business Development - Architecture:
- Develop and implement strategies to meet annual revenue and growth targets.
- Maintain an up-to-date CRM database.
- Lead, mentor, and manage business development activities firm-wide.
- Work closely with the Leadership Team (LT) to execute marketing and business development initiatives.
- Coordinate with marketing on a consistent, visible presence across social media and other platforms.
- Track regional market trends, publications, and associations to inform strategy.
- Evaluate and plan community events that support strategic goals.
- Prepare compelling presentations/proposals, establishing the firm as a trusted partner.
- Oversee, guide, and mentor business development/marketing staff.
- Collaborate with colleagues on proposal information and presentations.
- Cultivate industry contacts, client relationships, and strategic partnerships.
- Track/report on KPIs and financial metrics using the CRM platform.
- Explore opportunities in new geographic regions and market segments.
- Conduct competitive analyses, monitor market trends, and share insights with leadership.
- Represent the firm at conferences, networking events, and speaking engagements.
Education & Requirements for Director of Business Development - Architecture:
- Bachelor’s degree in Business, Marketing, Economics, or related field.
- 7–10 years of experience in business development or sales (preferably in A/E sectors).
- Valid driver’s license.
- Strong communication, organizational, and collaborative skills.
- Proven track record in identifying, negotiating, and closing deals in similar markets.
