General Description:
The Director of Design & Engineering is responsible for overseeing the Design and Engineering Department and its schedules, both internal and external. This role involves implementing and communicating standard policies and procedures, working closely with the Director of Technology Integration on technological advancements, and reporting to the Vice President of Construction Services and Design & Engineering.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
- Monitor incoming work and, with input from the Drafting & Engineering Managers, prioritize and plan actions using internal and external resources.
- Assist the VP with input regarding staff levels.
- Collaborate with Sales and Project Management to oversee both incoming and ongoing projects.
- Conduct performance reviews for the Drafting & Engineering Managers and assist the VP with compensation reviews.
- Evaluate and establish formal expectations, schedules, and change order policies with outsource firms.
- Work with Drafting Managers to set staff performance expectations.
- Partner with the Technology Integration team to update and maintain the Standard Practices Manual.
- Ensure compliance with Standard Practices, Policies, and Procedures.
- Understand all trades involved in a building project and their impact on precast components.
- Resolve problems and minimize conflicts between the company, contractors, and owners.
- Attend project progress meetings with architects, engineers, contractors, and owners, and relay information back to the Drafting and Engineering teams.
- Monitor production schedules and inform Project Management of any potential delays affecting the schedule.
- Be familiar with all company products, applications, and capabilities.
- Read construction documents and communicate concerns to the design team.
- Use AutoCAD, Revit, and other related software programs proficiently.
- Communicate effectively with department heads, architects, engineers, contractors, and clients.
- Oversee submittal drawing schedules and ensure timely submission before production dates.
- Maintain a deep understanding of the precast industry.
- Collaborate with accounting on departmental annual budgets and monitor project costs relative to budgets.
- Continuously monitor processes and practices, offering solutions to improve efficiencies, project outputs, and departmental culture.
- Lead the team to enhance culture, skills, and talent within the department.
- Partner with the Talent Acquisition team to recruit new talent.
- Serve as the division’s liaison to local universities.
- Complete special projects and perform other duties as assigned.
Education, Skills, and Abilities Required:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering required.
- 5+ years of experience in the precast industry required.
- Strong interpersonal skills for interaction with co-workers, customers, and contractors.
- Ability to train and coach other employees.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite and drafting (Revit) and engineering (Eriksson) software platforms.
- Demonstrated ability to lead a team with respect and dignity.
- Self-motivated and driven to complete tasks efficiently.
- Ability to travel with occasional overnight stays.
- Adaptability to changes aimed at achieving Best in Class standards.

- Manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination for typing, filing, and using office equipment.
- Visual acuity for reading small print.
