    Applied Optimization (AO) Job Description

    Job Title: Electro-Optical Engineer Reports to: Principal Scientist

    FLSA Status: Full-Time (Exempt) Department: Space Science

    Position Objective:

    Perform research and provide technical support in electro-optics design and development. Perform background research to support proposal writing. Coordinate activities with respect to the diverse team of engineers, IT and technical writing staff to support the project and the proposal work.

    Essential Functions:

    Design, model, analyze, and test optical and electro-optical/photonics systems using commercial, off-the-shelf hardware

    Conduct research and development in complex optical systems; apply the research to achieve required optical system performance

    Develop system and component specifications, tolerances, simulations and test procedures; modeling/optimization of sensor performance in optical conditions

    Perform opto-mechanical system design, test, and installation

    Develop alignment and test plans and procedures for developed/installed systems

    Troubleshoot alignment of optical systems in place for research; provide error analysis, analyze test data, produce written optical system technical reports

    Provide technical support in the selection of small business research proposals to the DoD

    Write and submit research proposals

    Provide liaison to academic communities providing electro-optical and photonic research

    Conduct laser safety training as required

    Ensure accuracy and follow documentation procedures for all work; maintain notebook of daily activities and provide weekly report of work

    Other duties as assigned

    Required Qualifications:

    Master’s degree or higher related to the field of optics or electro-optics with a superior academic record

    Experience/proficiency with scientific programming in Matlab, Python, or C++

    Experience/proficiency with Zemax or other ray tracing software

    Attention to detail and effective time and schedule management skills

    Effective organizing, planning, debugging, and problem-solving skills

    Ability to adapt within a small team to support evolving customer requirements

    Ability to execute instructions and communication in written, oral, and diagram form

    Demonstrated strong writing, fact-gathering, and analytical skills

    Basic computer and software skills including but not necessarily limited to Microsoft Office products (e.g., Outlook, Word, and Power Point)

    Preferred Qualifications:

    PhD graduate related to the field of optics, electro-optics, or photonics

    College cumulative GPA (Grade Point Average) of 3.5 or higher

    Citizenship/Security Clearance Requirements:

    U.S. Citizen or Green Card Holder

    May be required to obtain and maintain U.S. Government Security Clearance

    Employment Structure:

    In-office attendance; remote work is not available at this time
