The Emergency Vehicle Technician’s (EVT) primary duties are the repair and maintenance of emergency fire protection and public safety vehicles and equipment. The EVT also performs preventative maintenance, routine maintenance/repairs, and emergency repairs on vehicles including Construction Equipment, Automobiles, Light, Medium, and Heavy-Duty Trucks, Fire Apparatus and, Ambulances
Essential Job Functions
- Performs routine preventive maintenance and state inspections on the fleet of standard and emergency vehicles and equipment.
- Performs troubleshooting and accurate diagnoses of electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, and computerized vehicle components.
- Performs scheduled and unscheduled repairs to the fleet of standard and emergency vehicles and equipment.
- Repairs standard and emergency vehicles and equipment conforming to industry, City, State, and Federal standards.
- Responds to roadside or field repairs.
- Utilizes fleet maintenance software to record detailed and accurate documentation of service and repairs.
- Conducts new vehicle and equipment check-in, make-ready, and decommissioning operations.
- Performs good housekeeping practices to maintain the shop, work area, tools, and equipment in a safe and orderly manner.
- Test drives/operate vehicles and equipment before and after repairs.
- Interacts in a professional and respectful manner with coworkers, other city employees, vendors, and the public.
- Regular and punctual attendance is required.
- Performs other related job duties as assigned.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
- High School Diploma or GED
- Requires a minimum of 3 years of experience in automotive and/or heavy truck repair
- Two years experience in heavy equipment and/or Fire Apparatus repair
- Must possess at least one of the following EVT certifications: F3, F4, F5, F6, E1, E2, E3, or E4
- Must have EVT Level I Fire Apparatus Technician and EVT Level I Ambulance Technician certifications or applicable manufacturer training and certifications or obtain them within the first 18 months of employment
- Must have ASE Master Medium/Heavy Truck Technician certification or obtain it within the first 18 months of employment
- Must possess a Class A or B CDL Driver’s License, with a good driving record
KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS:
- Knowledge of NFPA standards and regulations for emergency vehicle maintenance and repair
- Must have knowledge of repairs and troubleshooting of automotive, heavy truck, and construction equipment
- Ability to read, understand and comprehend owners’ manuals, repairs manuals, schematics, and drawings to repair and maintain the fleet in accordance with manufacturers’ recommendations for troubleshooting, preventive maintenance, and repair procedures
- Knowledge of fluids and components used in the repair and servicing of vehicles and equipment
- Knowledge of proper disposal procedures for used oils, chemicals, and other hazardous materials
- Ability to work after normal business hours, weekends, and weekdays, as needed
- Skill in operating shop tools and equipment while following safety practices and standard operating procedures
- Skilled in the use of computers, maintenance software, and other office equipment
PHYSICAL/ENVIRONMENT REQUIREMENTS:
- Physical demands essential to a EVT Technician include strenuous activities such as lifting, pushing, pulling, shoveling, sweeping, and carrying heavy objects.
- Frequent standing, crawling, kneeling, crouching, balancing, stooping, and climbing will be required.
- Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force consistently.
- Mental and visual acuity along with talking and hearing are required to routinely perform physical activities and maintain a safe work environment.
- Safety PPE equipment is provided and must be worn as required by policy and good safety practices.
- Work is performed primarily inside and outside and is subject to all types of weather and temperature conditions. The worker may be exposed to chemicals, solvents, fumes, smoke and gases, and various types of surfaces, including slippery or uneven surfaces.
