Job Title: Enologist Industry: Winery / Winemaking Reports To: Winemaker Status: Full-Time, Hourly Schedule: Must be available to work weekends, evenings, and extended hours during harvest season
Job Summary:
Maryhill Winery is seeking a detail-oriented and proactive Enologist to join our winemaking team. This key position is responsible for performing critical laboratory and cellar functions that ensure the highest standards of wine quality. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in wine chemistry, a passion for quality improvement, and a collaborative spirit. The Enologist works closely with the Winemaker, cellar staff, and lab technicians to conduct analyses, support winemaking decisions, and implement process improvements throughout the year.
Key Responsibilities
Conduct accurate chemical and microbiological analyses in accordance with lab protocols.
Perform red wine phenolic analysis using a modified Harbertson-Adams assay.
Review and validate analytical results to identify discrepancies or trends.
Collaborate with the Winemaker to develop and execute lab testing plans.
Train and supervise lab interns and technicians in analytical procedures.
Introduce new testing methods and evaluate new laboratory equipment.
Maintain accurate lab data and blend records, ensuring traceability from tank to bottle.
Confirm that final bottling blend analysis matches finished wine results.
Participate in sensory evaluations and blending sessions with the winemaking team.
Provide data-driven recommendations to address wine quality issues or stylistic goals.
Prepare lab-scale blends and fining trials; assist with their execution in the cellar.
Lead quality-focused research projects and technical evaluations.
Support harvest operations including fermentation monitoring, nutrient additions, and trial evaluations.
Track wine histories and update analytical databases.
Assist with supervision of seasonal harvest interns.
Contribute to winemaking documentation and team planning efforts.
Stay current with industry trends through continued education and professional forums.
Sanitize tanks, equipment, hoses, and fittings per safety and quality standards.
Operate cellar equipment including pumps, presses, steamers, and ozone units.
Monitor headspace in tanks and perform routine SO₂ additions.
Ensure proper measuring, handling, and use of additives and cleaning agents.
Comply with all health and safety regulations, including confined space entry protocols.
Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment.
Perform general cellar duties as needed to support production goals.
Qualifications
Education & Experience:
Bachelor’s degree in Enology, Fermentation Science, or a related field preferred.
3–5 years of hands-on winery experience, including laboratory and cellar operations.
Technical Skills:
Proficient in wine chemistry, analytical testing, and laboratory best practices.
Familiarity with wine production software and lab data systems.
Skilled in Microsoft Excel, Word, and Outlook.
Personal Attributes:
Strong communication skills (written and verbal).
Highly organized with the ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.
Demonstrates integrity, attention to detail, and a proactive mindset.

Compensation & Benefits:
Hourly Rate: $25–$28 per hour, DOE
