    ** This position is eligible for a Department of Defense SkillBridge Program Internship for active duty servicemembers transitioning out of the U.S. Military.

    North Wind Site Services is focused on providing engineering, program management, and environmental remediation services including investigation and characterization, environmental restoration, unexploded ordnance/military munitions response (MMRP), regulatory public involvement services, environmental compliance, logistics, and records and facility management. ** _

    POSITION PURPOSE:_**
    The Environmental Technician supports the installation waste management program by delivering waste containers, performing waste pickups at various accumulation areas on base, applying knowledge of RCRA, TSCA, and other federal and state waste regulations, identification of deficiencies in packaging and storage, processing waste at the consolidation facility, snow removal at contractor -controlled facilities, performing initial waste characterizations, and maintaining a clean working environment among other activities. Additionally, the Environmental Technician will support the HWCF supervisor, subject matter experts, samplers, and administrative personnel with delegated tasks as necessary.

    In the spirit of North Wind's safety first culture, the Environmental Technician will be expected to perform their duties in a manner consistent with applicable OSHA, DOT, and RCRA regulations, established North Wind Safety policies and programs, and the project Accident Prevention Plan (APP). ** _

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:_**

    • Inspect, handle, containerize, load/unload, and transport waste and materials.
    • Inspect containers and collection areas for compliance with regulatory requirements.
    • Operate light and heavy vehicles and equipment; trucks, forklifts, plows, pumps, etc.
    • Spill response, remediation, and clean-up activities.
    • Perform initial waste characterizations
    • Performing pick-up/drop-off inspections at installation accumulation areas.
    • General warehouse operations, labor, and housekeeping.
    • Data entry and record keeping.
    • Strict adherence to safety program requirements.
    • Provide excellent customer service and client relations.
    • Maintenance of work area cleanliness.
    • Maintain a level of professionalism at all times.
    • Abide by company drug-free policy including a prohibition on cannabis usage.
    • Accomplish assigned tasks with minimal supervision and adapt to changing priorities.

    ADDITIONAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Operation of snow removal equipment to keep areas around contractor-controlled buildings clear.
    • Organization of warehouse and yard.
    • Other duties as assigned by the Site Supervisor and Project Manager.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: **

    Education and Experience:**

    • Must possess a high school diploma.
    • At least 1 year experience handling or managing RCRA-regulated wastes required.

    Skills and Abilities:

    • General computer skills, including the ability to learn waste-tracking software.
    • Ability to safely perform physical labor, including stooping, lifting, walking, carrying, etc.
    • Forklift operation.

    Special Requirements:

    • Possess or be able to obtain a 40 Hour HAZWOPER certification immediately upon employment.
    • Possess a valid driver's license.
    • Applicants are required to have nothing on record that would prohibit them from gaining access to military installations nor government computer systems (ESSOH-MIS).
    • Local Hire preferred (Ft. Wainwright).
    • Employment is contingent on passing background checks to obtain access to installation. Employment may also be contingent on ability of applicant to pass background check for DOD CAC card issuance for access to government computer systems.
    • Pass pre-employment background checks and drug screening for substances considered illicit at the federal level (including Cannabis and its derivatives).
    • Ability to pass occupational and DOT Physicals including respirator fit testing.

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

    • Alaska commercial driver's license (A, B, or C) with Hazmat endorsement strongly preferred.
    • RCRA McCoy or other equivalent RCRA training.

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

    • Must be able to stand and walk for prolonged periods of time.
    • Must be able to perform physical labor including kneeling, standing, walking, lifting up to 50 lbs.
    • Must be able to wear PPE as necessary, including respirators and Tyvek suits on occasion.

    WORKING ENVIRONMENT:
    The position will require work to be performed indoors and outdoors. The employee will be exposed to various weather conditions. Other hazards include, but are not limited to working near heavy equipment, noise hazards, chemicals, cleaning products, asbestos, lead-based paint, contaminated soils, hazardous and non-hazardous wastes, and road traffic.
