  • Responsibilities

    Summary

    Under the general supervision of the Landfill Manager, this position operates all applicable heavy equipment used in the landfill operation. The position is responsible for placing, compacting and covering waste to proper grades at each of the landfill cells. Additional requirements are to prepare, load and transport materials for recycle.

    Essential Job Functions

    • Responsible for compacting and covering solid waste using various heavy machinery.
    • Dust abatement with a water truck.
    • Grinding wood waste.
    • Sorting, loading and hauling recyclable materials.
    • Inspects incoming waste loads for prohibited materials.
    • Removes prohibited waste discovered in the cells and places in the appropriate areas or returns to customer.
    • Responsible for filling in on any of the needed positions at the landfill. This may include but not limited to equipment operation, scale house attendant, local deliveries of recycle material and any other duties assigned by management.
    • Provides courteous interaction and effective communications with landfill customers, regulating authorities, contract professionals and vendors.
    • Performs duties of skilled laborer as required.
    • Provides support to other members of the landfill team to insure completion of all tasks in a timely, safe manner.
    • Responsible for daily equipment checks to ensure equipment being used has proper fluid levels and is in safe working condition.
    • Works safely around public keeping in mind they are the first priority.

    Competencies

    • Knows the hazards of the job and is trained in safety precautions of the trade. Follows all safety procedures, polices and communicates any unsafe condition or accidents/injuries in a timely manner to the landfill manager in order to facilitate prompt correction or reporting.
    • Has general knowledge of and operates all applicable heavy equipment including, but not limited to; landfill compactors, bulldozers, motor graders, hydraulic excavators, backhoes, loaders, forklifts, dump trucks, water trucks, roll-off trucks, grinders, scrapers, etc.
    • Effective communications skills to allow courteous interaction with the public and fellow employees.

    This position has supervisory responsibilities over 0 employees.

    Work Environment

    • Must be flexible in work schedules and work hours to maintain proper manpower to complete all functions needed to operate the landfill.

    Physical Demands

    The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

    • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to sit; stand; walk; lift; use hands to finger, handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms. Ability to lift up to 60 pounds, twist, and bend.
    • The position works outdoors in all types of weather conditions. The landfill contains less than sanitary conditions.

    Position Type and Expected Hours of Work

    This is a full-time position. Days and hours of work are Tuesday-Saturday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

    Travel

    Occasional travel is expected.

    Required Education and Experience

    • High School Graduate or GED equivalent is required.
    • Prefer a minimum of two years heavy equipment operation experience. Knowledge and experience to use, maintain, and perform routine repairs of equipment utilized.

    Additional Eligibility Requirements

    • Must obtain Hepatitis B vaccination in the required time for health standards.

    • Must maintain a valid Oregon Driver’s license.

    • Possess a CDL endorsement and pass medical certification in accordance with motor carrier regulations sections 391.41-391.49 as it will be required for continued employment.

    • Able to complete a thorough employment and/or criminal history check.

    • Final candidates will be required to provide official proof of college degree and certified transcripts (not required for all positions).
