    JOB DESCRIPTION

    Job Title: Executive Director

    I. POSITION SUMMARY

    The mission of the Metropolitan Tenants Organization (MTO) is to educate, organize, and empower tenants to have a voice in the decisions that affect the affordability and availability of safe, decent, and accessible housing.

    The Executive Director is responsible for the overall leadership and management of day-to-day operations for MTO. The Executive Director works with the Board of Directors to develop a clear vision for the organization, translates the vision into realistic goals and objectives, and executes that vision. The Executive Director reports to the Board of Directors and is responsible for administrative and fiscal management, supervision, fundraising/resource development, and advocacy related to rental housing issues.

    II. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

    1. Administrative and Management. Ensures that appropriate systems are in place to facilitate the day-to-day operations of the organization in the development and delivery of programs and services.

    • Fosters a workplace environment that is respectful, promotes initiative and creates individual opportunities for professional development.

    • Ensures implementation of organization’s standard operating procedures and personnel policies and practices.

    • Responsible for oversight of official records and documents, ensuring compliance with all legal and regulatory requirements; with applicable city, state, and federal laws.

    • Works with the Board to develop appropriate policies to ensure the efficiency and effectiveness of programs and services.

    • Ensures compliance with all contract and grant requirements.

    1. Human Resources Management and Development. Responsible for the recruitment, employment, development and release of all personnel, both paid staff and volunteers.

    • Builds, leads and retains an effective team, with appropriate provision for succession in place.

    • Supervises the Associate Director and other lead staff.

    • Ensures that job descriptions are developed, that regular performance evaluations are held, and that sound human resource practices are in place.

    • Encourages staff and volunteer training and development to enhance their professional growth and increase the quality of services provided by MTO.

    • Maintains a climate which attracts, keeps, and motivates a diverse staff of high performers.

    1. Fiscal Management. Establishes a system linking strategic and operational planning with the organization’s budgeting process.

    • Ensures that an accurate accounting system is maintained in accordance with general accounting principles and that all confidential information is retained in a safe place.

    • Working with the Internal Committee of the Board, prepares an annual budget for Board approval and ensures that the organization operates within budget guidelines.

    • Monitors all financial and accounting activities and ensures compliance with federal tax and Form 990 requirements.

    • Approves financial disbursements, all professional services agreements and vendor contracts.

    • Submits regular financial reports for Board review.

    • Identifies and evaluates the risks to the organization's people (clients, staff, management, and volunteers), property, finances, goodwill, and image, and implement measures to control risks

    • Ensures that the Board of Directors and the organization carries appropriate and adequate insurance coverage.

    • Ensures that the Board and staff understand the terms, conditions and limitations of insurance coverage.

    1. Fund Raising and Resource Development. Leads or supervises others to develop and implement a comprehensive fundraising strategy to diversify the funding base through major donor cultivation, grassroots fundraising, and in-kind donations.

    • Creates fundraising campaigns that include Board, staff, community members, and other stakeholders.

    • Establishes partnerships with businesses or other institutions as potential contributors to MTO’s resources.

    • Coordinates fundraising efforts including submission of funding proposals to foundations, governmental agencies and other potential sources of funding MTO programs and services.

    • Some grant writing.

    • Maintains relationships with funders.

    1. Executive Director/Board Relations. Works with the Board to shape the vision for the future, actively soliciting their input on key priority issues in a timely, effective manner and formulating recommendations for consideration by the Board.

    • In coordination with the Board, establishes appropriate systems for dialogue and communication between the Board and staff to ensure that the Board maintains current working knowledge of the organization.

    • Contributes to the effectiveness of the Board by providing strategic input to its members, keeping the Board informed and by implementing board directives effectively and efficiently.

    • Participates as an ex-officio (attends) member of the Board and attends Committee Meetings as requested.

    • Maintains regular communication with the Board President.

    • Works with Board, staff and membership to set strategic vision for the organization.

    1. Advocacy and Communications. Leads or supervises others to ensure that all programming, advocacy, and communication efforts remain consistent with the mission, vision, and values of MTO.

    • Communicates with stakeholders to keep them informed of the work of MTO and to identify changes in the community served by the organization.

    • Leads advocacy campaigns and keep the membership at-large informed about organizational activities.

    • Establishes good working relationships and build collaborative alliances with community groups, funders, and legislators and other organizations to achieve MTO goals and objectives.

    • Facilitates positive relationships with agency’s partnerships and external stakeholders.

    • Serves as the spokesperson for the organization.

    • Represents MTO to other organizations, the media, and the public at large.

    III. REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS

    • Bachelor’s Degree with at least 10 years of experience. Master’s degree preferred.

    • Deep belief in and passion for MTO’s mission.

    • Strong understanding of nonprofit financial management. Experience with budgeting and fundraising.

    • Excellent communication skills with the ability to meet people where they are and engage in meaningful dialogue with stakeholders.

    • Leads and manages with a growth mindset, open to learning and adapting.

    • Culturally responsive and emotionally intelligent.
