POSITION SUMMARY
The assistant is a vital position at Maricamp Animal Hospital as this position is part of the backbone and foundation of the clinic. The person in this role is the veterinary technician's primary medical support, assisting in the care of animals, the hospital, all medical equipment, and machinery. The primary responsibility of this position is to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of the clinic through the maintenance of a clean, efficient, and healthy environment for animals being treated.

OBJECTIVES
Assist doctors and credentialed veterinary technicians with preparation for appointments and surgery, contributing to the organizational effectiveness of the hospital
Prepares for surgeries, creating surgical packs and ensuring a cleaning & sterile surgery room and proper care for all surgical materials and equipment
Contributes to revenue-generating activities such as upselling, dental cleanings, and obtaining client reviews and testimonials.
Effectively utilizing all safety measures to ensure our patients are stable, pain-free, and recover quickly from any anesthetic procedure.
Utilize appropriate methods for documenting changes in pet condition in medical records to ensure alignment during and after surgeries
Follows all company policy for accurate and efficient preparation of all appointments
Observe patient behavior and update medical records for all appointments to ensure team member's and owners' safety
Collect and prepare timely laboratory samples such as fecal, urine, ear cytology, and samples to be sent off to outside laboratories
Perform clinical laboratory procedures such as fecal flotation, heartworm checks, and urinalysis; maintain files of lab test results and ensure that test results are recorded in patient records and printed for doctor
Assist in medicine delivery, IV fluids, clip and clean, ear flush, laser therapy, and have the ability to safely administer medication to patients
Handles all Approval for Rx Prescriptions if within refill doctor approved date, fills prescriptions, and calls client to pick up
Responsible for assisting technicians with discharging patients based on veterinarian’s orders utilizing best practices
Contribute to the maintenance, cleanliness, and organization of the hospital and all equipment and tools
Perform other duties as assigned by doctors, receptionists, and veterinary technicians with speed and accuracy to assist in the smooth flow of the daily operation of the hospital
Maintain accurate statistics to ensure departmental goals are on target. Adhere to the hospital’s safety and wellness regulations; maintain a safe work environment, follow OSHA and chemical standards
Successfully contribute to a positive environment and empower fellow team members to achieve wins and successes
REQUIRED COMPETENCIES
Understanding of the human-animal bond and the ability to handle animals safely
Understanding of veterinary medicine and accuracy in Rx Prescription handling
Knowledge of blood and urine machines and ability to run CBC, Chemistry, Thyroid, and Urine testing
Knowledge of radiology and ability to successfully attain accurate images for doctors
Knowledge of how to safely handle fractious animals and how to restrain animals in a safe, efficient, and compassionate manner
Knowledge of medications versus injectables and ability to mix vaccines accurately and safely administer them to patients
Excellent verbal and written communication skills with a proven ability to navigate relationships with clients, co-workers, and patients
Ability to monitor time efficiency while maintaining an organized environment to empower technicians and doctors to help increase the number of patients
Ability to effectively utilize company resources to improve technical and communication skills
Ability to maintain excellent customer relationships through compassionate and professional communication
Outstanding organization and medical accountability; proficient in computer skills
Ability to maintain confidentiality with individual interactions with patients
Successfully maintaining a positive attitude while working in a team environment with competing priorities
Must have the physical and mental fortitude to perform in a fast-paced and challenging environment
REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
1-2 year Veterinary experience in the field as a Veterinary Assistant (required)
Knowledge of veterinary medical procedures and animal handling (required)
Certified Veterinary Assistant - CVA Certification (preferred, not required)
Bilingual English & Spanish is a plus
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Ability to spend prolonged periods standing, sitting, or walking
Must be able to lift at least 25lbs
Travel Required: Up to 15% for Continuing Education & Training

Schedule:
Rotating Day shift, 40 hours per week to be scheduled during business hours
Business Hours: Monday to Friday 8am-6pm and Saturday, 8am-1pm.
