Job Summary
The Facility Surgery Coder is responsible for reviewing and assigning accurate medical codes for surgical procedures, diagnoses, and services provided in inpatient and outpatient settings. Specialties included but not limited to general surgery, gynecology, pain management (injections, implants, and epidurals), spine (fusion and implants), orthopedics, ear, nose, and throat. The coder ensures compliance with coding guidelines, payer regulations, and hospital policies to facilitate appropriate reimbursement and data integrity.
Job Description
§ Assign, accurate ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS codes for surgical procedures, diagnoses, and services based on provider documentation.
§ Abstract pertinent information from medical records to ensure completeness and accuracy.
§ Validate documentation to ensure coding meets regulatory, payer, and institutional requirements.
§ Query physicians or other healthcare providers when clarification is needed.
§ Adhere to Official Coding Guidelines, CPT Assistant, AHA Coding Clinic, and payer policies to maintain compliance.
§ Conduct self-audits and participate in quality reviews to maintain accuracy and meet productivity standards.
§ Stay updated with Medicare, Medicaid, and private payer regulations related to surgical coding.
§ Assist in coding-related audits, denials, and appeals by providing accurate coding justifications.
Qualifications
§ Certified Professional Coder (CPC), Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), or equivalent coding certification.
§ Minimum 5 years of experience in surgery coding within a hospital and ambulatory setting.
§ Strong knowledge of ICD-10-CM, CPT, HCPCS Level II, and DRG/APC reimbursement systems.
§ Familiarity with EMR systems (e.g., Epic, Cerner, Meditech).
§ Ability to interpret operative reports and surgical procedures accurately.
§ Strong understanding of anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology related to surgery.
§ Excellent analytical, communication, and organizational skills.
§ Attention to detail and ability to meet productivity benchmarks.
