Financial Accountant
Independence Community College is seeking a Financial Accountant to assist the Controller in the preparation and maintenance of financial records in accordance with accounting principles. The successful candidate will play a key role in ensuring financial accuracy, compliance, and efficiency in all financial operations.
The Financial Accountant is a full-time, 12-month classified salaried position with a salary range of
$50,000 - $55,000, commensurate with qualifications, job knowledge, and experience. This position reports directly to the Controller.
Primary Responsibilities
Prepare, examine, and analyze accounting records, financial statements, and reports to ensure accuracy and compliance with procedural standards.
Manage and reconcile accounts, including accounts payable, receivable, payroll, and general ledger functions.
Assist in budget development and monitoring to align with institutional goals and regulatory requirements.
Coordinate audits and prepare financial reports for internal and external stakeholders, including the Board of Trustees and governmental agencies.
Analyze financial data to provide recommendations for improved financial performance and forecasting.
Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local financial regulations by monitoring legislative changes and enforcing adherence to requirements.
Provide financial data support for grant applications and reporting.
Collaborate with various departments to streamline financial processes and enhance operational efficiency.
Assist in tax filings and compliance documentation.
Prepare periodic financial reports for management as needed.
Complete monthly bank reconciliations by the 15th of the following month.
Maintain knowledge of financial policies, regulations, and best practices.
Proficiently use Ellucian Colleague and Intuit QuickBooks software.
Record and reconcile ACH payments and deposits monthly.
Create and input journal entries for the Business Office and campus departments.
Set up and assess student charges, importing bookstore, library, and meal charges to student accounts.
Assist with reconciliation of federal funds and filing record retention.
Contribute to the completion of the annual financial audit.
Support the creation and management of Board of Trustees financial reports and business intelligence dashboards.
Perform additional duties assigned by the Controller.

Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
Minimum of two years of accounting experience; experience in education or fund accounting preferred.
Strong knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and fund accounting.
Proficiency in accounting software such as QuickBooks, and Colleague.
Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including the use of complex formulas and functions.
Strong understanding of financial regulations at the federal, state, and local levels.
Excellent attention to detail, organizational, and analytical skills.
Ability to build effective communication and interpersonal relationships across the institution and the community.
Strong time management skills and ability to meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
Ability to handle confidential information with discretion.

Working Conditions & Physical Requirements
Light work with occasional lifting of up to 20 pounds.
Ability to sit, stand, or walk for extended periods.
Work is performed in both indoor and outdoor settings.
