  • Responsibilities

    The purpose of this position is to perform police activities and emergency response in the interest of public safety.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Responds to calls for service by patrolling assigned district, enforcing laws and ordinances, issuing citations, making arrests, serving subpoenas, and answering citizen complaints.
    • Investigates crimes, accidents, or violations by conducting witness and suspect interviews, following up on leads, and completing assigned cases.
    • Performs field operations by conducting surveillance, organizing and directing officers, and executing search and arrest warrants.
    • Prepares documentation of incidents, reports, and search warrants and maintains files.
    • Attends court and testifies if necessary.

     

    SUPPLEMENTAL FUNCTIONS:

    • Performs other similar duties as required.

    JOB SPECIFICATIONS AND QUALIFICATIONS:

     Knowledge:

    • North Carolina General Statutes
    • Basic rules and regulations of criminal investigations, federal, state, city, and department
    • Basic Police investigative and identification techniques
    • Geography of city
    • Firearms
    • Computers

    Licensing and Certifications:

    • Ability to obtain Basic Law Enforcement Certification. Failure to obtain within twelve (12) months of hire may result in termination.
    • Valid North Carolina Driver’s License

      PLEASE NOTE: Applicants must meet the City criteria for an acceptable driving record.

    WORKING CONDITIONS / PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

    • Positions in this class require: standing, fine dexterity, walking, lifting, carrying, sitting, reaching, handling, pushing/pulling, climbing, vision, foot controls, balancing, bending, crouching, hearing, twisting, talking.
    • Heavy Work: Exerting 50 - 100 pounds occasionally, 25 -50 pounds frequently, or from 10 up to 20 pounds constantly.
    • Incumbents may be subjected to extreme temperature, wetness and/or humidity, respiratory hazards, noise and vibration, physical hazards.

     POSITIONS ASSIGNED TO CRIMINAL INVESTIGATIONS DIVISION:

    • Positions in this class require: standing, fine dexterity, walking, lifting, carrying, sitting, reaching, handling, pushing/pulling, climbing, vision, foot controls, balancing, bending, crouching, hearing, twisting, talking.
    • Medium Work: Exerting 20 - 50 pounds occasionally, 10-25 pounds frequently, or up to 10 pounds constantly.
    • Incumbents may be subjected to extreme temperature, wetness and/or humidity, respiratory hazards, noise and vibration, physical hazards.

     POSITIONS ASSIGNED TO CITY HALL:

    • Position in this class requires: standing, fine dexterity, walking, lifting, carrying, sitting, reaching, handling, pushing/pulling, climbing, vision, foot controls, balancing, bending, crouching, hearing, twisting, talking.
    • Sedentary Work: Exerting up to 10 pounds occasionally or negligible weights frequently; sitting most of the time.
    • Incumbents may be subjected to extreme temperature, wetness and/or humidity, respiratory hazards, noise and vibration, physical hazards.

     POSITIONS ASSIGNED TO VICE, NARCOTICS, FORENSICS OR PROPERTY CONTROL:

    • Positions in this class are subject to more frequent drug testing due to the sensitive nature of the assignment.

    Required Experience

    High school diploma or equivalency; or the City may consider an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job.
