NEEDED: Fleet Maintenance Technician I (Mechanic)
LOCATION: COLUMBUS CIVIC CENTER 400 4th St, Columbus, GA 31901
HOURS: As Needed/ Event Driven, 7 days a week, Monday-Sunday, 12:00 AM – 12:00 PM
DRESS CODE: Black or brown shoes and black pants

Major Duties and Responsibilities:
- Performs inspections and preventive maintenance on light vehicles and is periodically required to work in the tire repair shop.
- Supervises and trains inmates; maintains records on inmates.
- Creates work orders and records.
- Opens request orders for parts.
- Processes vehicles for salvage and sale at annual city auction. Repairs, maintains and calibrates shop equipment and tools.
- This position may require driving shop assigned inmates to and from the prison on a periodic basis.
- Carries out a continuous effort to improve operations, work processes and works cooperatively and jointly to provide continuous improvement and customer-driven service.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Knowledge of automotive repair and maintenance.
- Knowledge of the use of shop equipment and tools.
- Knowledge of safety practices and procedures.
- Skills in the use of computers.
- Skills in interpersonal relations.
- Skills in oral and written communication.
Educational and Training Requirements:
- Ability to read, write, and perform mathematical calculations at a level commonly associated with the completion of high school or equivalent.
- Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
- Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
- This position is required to supervise state inmate labor.
- Must pass the Department of Corrections three-day certification within the time frame required by the department which is normally six months but may be altered.
Physical Requirements:
- Work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing, stooping, walking, bending, or crouching.
- Frequently lifts light and heavy objects, climbs ladders, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, and distinguishes between shades of color.
