GENERAL DESCRIPTION / PRIMARY PURPOSE
The FSQA Supply Chain intern will focus on identifying prevalence of pathogenic bacteria in the environment.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND TASKS/DUTIES OF THE POSITION
- Observe, review and document current practices that could cause cross-contamination
- Research current thinking on migration of pathogenic bacteria utilizing industry resources
- Design multiple experiments that can help identify the prevalence of E. coli in soil, air, water and equipment
- Design experiments that can help identify the prevalence of Salmonella in soil, air, water, and equipment
- Research pathogenic bacteria in soil in the Salinas area
- Creative research on migration patterns of birds and how they can microbiologically affect the environment
- Track and trend data
- Create metrics for assessing risks based on information found
- Partake in implementing program in conjunction with FSQA Supply Chain team and Ag Operations teams
- Other duties as assigned
INTERNSHIP TYPE
- 2021 12-week summer internship.
- Paid internship.
- No housing assistance provided.
Required Skills
SKILLS
- Knowledge of Word, Excel and PowerPoint
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, ability to work in a collaborative and inclusive environment
- Strong organization skills
- Higher level if understanding in microbiology
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit; use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools, or controls; talk or hear.
- Ability to maneuver around an array of equipment, bend, stoop, climb stairs, climb on and off equipment, lift up to 25 pounds.
- Ability to work in various weather conditions.
- Ability to walk in uneven ground.
WORK HOUR REQUIREMENT
- 40-hour workweek, no overtime expected
TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS
- Periodic travel to and from ranches, labs, and Dole's growing regions. A Dole vehicle will be utilized or for personal car usage, mileage will be reimbursed.
Required Experience
EDUCATION AND CERTIFICATION
- Fall 2021 Maters or PhD candidate with a focus on human pathogens in food, pathogens in agriculture, food microbiology or plant science.
- Valid driver's license.
