The San Francisco Standard (sfstandard.com) is on the hunt for a passionate and seasoned Food Reporter. As a full-time team member, you will work closely with the Food Editor to cover breaking news, feature stories, restaurant openings, and the economics behind the way the Bay Area eats.

This position is ideal for someone with a strong journalistic background, a deep understanding of the restaurant industry, an insatiable appetite for great food (and even better stories), and an open mind for what's delicious. All of this should be combined with an appreciation for the cultural nuances that make the Bay Area a melting pot of food traditions.

Strong opinions about the SF's best croissant, Logan Moffitt, and seed oil-free diets are not only welcomed but required.

    Responsibilities:

    • In-depth daily reporting: Uncover the best new restaurants and bars, digging into the quirks, trends, and personalities that define the Bay Area food scene.
    • Feature writing: Craft stories that go beyond the surface, exploring the human side of the dining scene, including restaurants' societal impact, chefs' obsessions, and the vibe shifts shaping how we eat.
    • Represent the Standard: Serve as an event moderator and public-facing expert in the media.
    • Source building: Develop and maintain an extensive network of restaurant owners, cooks, chefs, dining influencers, and other food-world players.
    • Newsroom collaboration: Work with editors, photographers, videographers, and other talented journalists to turn your stories into captivating experiences – think videos, podcasts, and interactive story formats.

    Requirements:

    • 3+ years of reporting experience, especially covering the food beat.
    • Curiosity about and passion for the Bay Area's restaurants, chefs, and other food trend-setters.
    • Exceptional writing and storytelling abilities.
    • Proven ability to build and maintain a network of sources within the food and beverage community.
    • Proficiency in digital content management systems, social media and an understanding of multimedia storytelling.
    • Fast-paced news startup? No problem. You thrive on the adrenaline of breaking stories.
    • Bachelor's degree in journalism, communications, or a related field.

This is an in-person role based in San Francisco, and occasional evening or weekend work may be required. We offer competitive salaries and excellent benefits.

To apply, please submit a resume, cover letter, and at least five work samples, including examples of impactful food and/or restaurant reporting. Share insights into the challenges you encountered and any real-world impact or response resulting from your journalism.

The pay range for this role is $75,000 to $110,000. Actual compensation packages are based on several factors unique to each candidate. We encourage you to apply even if you don't fit all the preferred qualifications of the job.
