Summary
The GIS Technician will support the information technology team by managing and executing geographic information system (GIS) projects. This role involves utilizing the ESRI suite of technologies, with a focus on ArcGIS Pro, to perform spatial analysis and manage geospatial data. The technician will collaborate with various departments to leverage spatial data for informed decision-making and to enhance community services. Additionally, the position offers opportunities for professional development within the geospatial industry.
Responsibilities:
- Data Management: Assist with the acquisition, organization, and maintenance of spatial datasets, ensuring data integrity and accuracy. Help support the development and implementation of data standards and protocols for GIS operations.
- Spatial Analysis: Conduct spatial analyses to support planning, resource management, and decision-making processes. Utilize GIS techniques to identify patterns, trends, and relationships within spatial data.
- Cartography and Visualization: Design and produce high-quality maps and visualizations for internal and public consumption. Ensure maps adhere to cartographic principles and effectively communicate spatial information.
- Database Management: Understand how to access GIS databases, including data storage, retrieval.
- Application Development: Learn & Develop custom GIS applications, tools, and scripts to automate workflows and enhance GIS capabilities. Strong interest in programming languages such as Python, JavaScript, or SQL is preferred.
- User Support and Training: Assist in providing technical support and training to GIS users across the organization. Assist users with GIS software usage, troubleshooting, and best practices.
- Research and Innovation: Stay informed about emerging trends and technologies in GIS and spatial analysis. Explore innovative approaches to GIS problem-solving.
- Collaboration and Communication: Foster collaboration and knowledge-sharing among GIS team members and stakeholders. Communicate GIS concepts and findings to non-technical audiences in a clear and accessible manner.
Qualifications:
- Associate’s degree (or in current process of obtaining) in Geography, GIS, Computer Science, or a related field is required. Bachelor's degree preferred.
- Preferred to have a minimum of 1 year of experience in GIS workflows, application development with Experience Builder, and data management techniques, preferably in a local government or public sector environment.
- Proficiency in ESRI ArcGIS Pro and other GIS software platforms.
- Interest in spatial analysis techniques.
- Entry level experience in programming languages commonly used in GIS, such as Python, and JavaScript
- Analytical, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with diverse stakeholders.
- Proven ability to take direction and initiative on multiple projects simultaneously.
- Knowledge of local government operations, policies, and regulations is desirable.

This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.

Required Education and Experience
- Obtained or currently obtaining associate’s degree (completed within 1 year of hire date) in GIS, Information Technology, Computer Science, or related field.
