    About General Biological:

General Biological (GB) is an unconventional manufacturing company pioneering the next generation of chemical production. We develop novel biomanufacturing technologies that will supply the world with the physical material and chemical products needed – but from renewable carbohydrates, not hydrocarbons.

Our philosophy is to vertically integrate. We are combining our knowledge at the intersection of biotechnology, chemistry, hardware, and software engineering to build a new technology stack that rapidly scales. The GB platform centers on the use of a non-model organism with extremely enhanced production rates and low sterility requirements, properties which let us truly industrialize biotech. We exploit these properties by building our own bioreactor hardware and operating our own downstream operations, shredding our capital and operating costs and accelerating timelines.

With this philosophy in mind, we aim to scale bioproduction and catalyze a shift in the industry towards renewable feedstocks. After a successful $5.6M round of seed financing, we are looking for our first team members to join us in this journey to build a generational heavy industries company.

    Summary:

We are hiring a strain engineer to accelerate the development of our non-model organism production strains. The position will be focused on engineering and optimizing strains to hit target production metrics, and developing assays to assess performance at scale. You will work across functions, including genome engineering, strain characterization, and initial scale-up production. You will also assist with lab operations and maintenance tasks as needed.

    Essential functions:

    • Engineer production strains through knowledge of metabolism, modeling, or cellular physiology
    • Execute standard molecular biology techniques (PCR, molecular cloning, gel electrophoresis, transformation, adaptive laboratory evolution)
    • Develop screening protocols to assess strain phenotypes and performance
    • Collect, analyze, and present data from experiments

    Education and experience:

    • B.S., M.S, or PhD in molecular biology, metabolic engineering, strain engineering, or a related field
    • Prior experience in a laboratory setting developing and executing assays
    • Possess an attention to detail, data-driven mindset, and strong work ethic
    • Experience with chemical engineering/process development of any kind is a plus
    • Able to work with little oversight and learn quickly in a fast-paced environment
    • Startup experience is a plus!
